Got a call from someone out at Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve. She had driven her 2009 4Runner out there for a morning walk along the bluff trail and came back to find her key wouldn't turn the ignition past ACC.
She tried the usual stuff. Wiggling the steering wheel, pumping the brake, pulling the key out and reinserting it. Nothing. The security light on the dash was blinking steady, which told me the immobilizer was rejecting the transponder, not a mechanical lock issue.
I drove out, plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port, and pulled up the immobilizer module. The system showed one registered key but the transponder response was failing validation. The 4D-67 chip inside her key had gone weak. It happens on these. The chip is passive, powered by the antenna coil around the ignition cylinder, and after fifteen-plus years the transponder can start giving inconsistent reads.
Cut a new TOY44D-PT blade by decoding her door lock, then ran the seed calculation on the immobilizer ECU to register the fresh 4D-67 chip. The security light went solid, then off. Clean start.
I ran three ignition cycles, pulled the key and reinserted between each one, and tested from cold. She sat on the tailgate watching the ocean the whole time. Barely looked up until I handed her two working keys.
No tow truck. No waiting room at the dealer. Just a fix on the bluff, for way less than Toyota would have charged.
