1999 Toyota 4runner Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy visiting his in-laws near Harry A. Lyon Park in Ventura called me about his 1999 4Runner. Straight to the point: "Is an aftermarket key going to be as good as a dealer key?" He wanted a daily-carry spare, not something buried in a kitchen drawer for emergencies.
Fair question. I get it a lot on third-gen 4Runners.
His ignition key uses the TOY43 blade profile and a 4C transponder chip. That chip just has to pass the fixed-code handshake with the immobilizer ECU, which on this generation is integrated into the key warning computer behind the dash, part number 89730-35080. It either matches or it does not. There is no rolling encryption, no proximity detection, nothing fancy. A properly sourced aftermarket blank with the correct 4C glass chip does the same job as a factory key with the Toyota logo on it.
His remote was the HYQ12BBX, four buttons, powered by a CR2032. The aftermarket housing I carry has the same button layout, same weight, same clip mechanism. The circuit board inside is functionally identical. The difference is cosmetic.
I cut the blade on site, programmed the transponder through the OBD port, and paired the remote. Whole thing took about twenty minutes. He clicked every button twice, locked it, unlocked it, popped the hatch, then put it on his keyring right there.
Where aftermarket goes wrong is cheap sourcing. Thin shells that crack in weeks, generic chips that almost register. I test every batch before it rides in the van.
