A woman up there called me about her 2017 4Runner. She had bought it used, always meant to get a spare cut, and never got around to it. The shell on her remote head key had been cracking for a while, the kind of slow split that starts at a corner and works its way around. Then the blade snapped off in the door lock cylinder. Not bent, not stuck in the ignition. Snapped clean, half of it wedged in the door. She was standing in the driveway holding the fob housing with nothing attached to it.
First thing I did was extract the blade fragment from the lock. Then I decoded the cylinder to get the cut. While I had the broken housing open, I checked the circuit board and the transponder chip. Both were fine, sitting there perfectly intact inside a shell that looked like it lost a fight with the driveway.
Because the original chip was readable, I did not need to go the long route. I transferred the board into a new matching shell, cut two fresh blades to the decoded specs, and verified both keys at the door and at the ignition. The whole call, including the extraction, ran about 40 minutes.
She texted me later that she had already ordered a magnetic key holder for the frame. Smart.
The dealer would have treated this as a full replacement job regardless of what was salvageable. Having the original key, even a broken one, changed the whole equation.
