He was pulled over on the shoulder of the highway just outside Oak View when I got to him. Not a great spot, but he'd had worse days, until the key snapped.
Half the blade was still in the ignition cylinder. The other half was in his hand. He'd already called another locksmith who told him over the phone that the cylinder would need to be drilled out and replaced. That quote had him sitting on a guardrail doing the math.
I told him to hold off. A broken blade in a Toyota ignition cylinder, when the wafers haven't been damaged, is an extraction job, not a replacement job. I used the right Lishi tool for this keyway, worked around the stuck fragment carefully, and pulled it clean without disturbing the wafers inside. Then I decoded the lock from the wafer positions, cut a new blade to match, and programmed the transponder chip through the OBD port.
His fob was fine. The remote head key setup on the 2016 4Runner keeps the fob and the blade as one unit, but the remote portion survived the break intact. All he needed was a new blade with a working chip, programmed and tested on site.
The cylinder works exactly as it did before. No drilling, no new parts, no tow to a dealer. He drove out of there in under an hour. The other locksmith's plan would have cost him significantly more and left him with a replaced cylinder instead of his original one.
Non-destructive is always the first approach. Drilling is a last resort, not a default.
