2018 Toyota 4runner
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

Noticeably more, and it's the same on most Toyotas. When you have a working key, adding a spare is a faster job because the immobilizer just registers an additional key alongside the existing one. When all keys are lost, the system has to be fully reset first, the existing key records cleared, and then the new key enrolled from zero. That reset process takes longer and requires a deeper connection through the diagnostic port.

Q: Do aftermarket 4Runner keys work, or should I stick with OEM?

It depends on the source. The 2018 4Runner remote head key uses a specific transponder chip, and not every aftermarket shell on the market carries the right one. Some do, some don't, and you usually can't tell from the listing. A fob with the wrong chip will cut and look perfect but the vehicle won't recognize it.

Q: My 4Runner remote head key fob stopped working but the key still starts the car. What's going on?

That's actually a useful clue. The remote head key on the 2018 4Runner has two independent systems in one unit: the transponder that talks to the immobilizer when you turn the ignition, and the RF transmitter that handles the lock, unlock, and panic functions on the fob buttons. If the car starts fine but the buttons do nothing, the transponder side is healthy and your immobilizer is not the issue.

Q: Can I program a second key for my 2018 4Runner myself at home?

Not on this system. The 2018 4Runner remote head key requires professional diagnostic equipment to register. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button trick that works here. The immobilizer on this generation communicates through the OBD port and the registration has to be done with a proper key programming tool. If you bought a key online hoping to DIY the programming, you'll still need a locksmith or dealer to pair it to the vehicle.

2018 Toyota 4runner Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Downtown Ojai who'd lost his only key somewhere between a trail and the parking area near the arcade shops. He'd retraced his whole route, checked with a nearby business, nothing. His 2018 4Runner was just sitting there with no way in and no spare anywhere.

When I pulled up, first thing was getting the door open without damage. Once inside, I decoded the lock cylinder to pull the exact cut depths I needed for a working blade, then cut the replacement key on site.

The mechanical side was done fast. The longer part was the immobilizer work. All-keys-lost on this generation requires a full reset through the diagnostic port, clearing whatever was registered before and enrolling the new key from scratch. The reset has a timed sequence built in, so you're watching a countdown and waiting on it rather than rushing it. Once it cleared, I registered the new remote head key, verified the transponder was talking to the vehicle, and confirmed all three fob buttons were working.

He started the truck right there in the lot. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a tow plus a multi-day wait and a number that made him wince. I don't think he expected the whole thing to be done before he finished his coffee.

All-keys-lost sounds like a worst-case situation. On the 2018 4Runner it's a field job when you have the right equipment.

Toyota 4runner Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for my 2018 4Runner?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Toyota dealers typically quote the remote head key replacement as separate line items: the fob, the key blade, programming, and a diagnostic fee. Those add up fast, and you still have to get the vehicle there. With EZ Car Keyz, I come to you in Ojai, cut and program the key on site, and the total is one number covering everything.
