Got a call from a guy out at Cachuma Lake Recreation Area in Santa Barbara. He was loading up his fishing gear after a long morning on the water and his 2000 4Runner remote just quit. Lock, unlock, panic, hatch release, nothing. He was hitting the buttons hard enough to leave a thumbprint.
I drove out and popped the remote open on his tailgate. The CR2032 looked fine at first glance, but my meter read 2.6 volts. These remotes want a solid 3 volts. Anything under 2.8 and the range drops off a cliff, then the buttons stop registering altogether. Fresh CR2032 in, contacts cleaned, and the fob lit up from twenty feet away.
Then I checked his ignition key while I was there. The 2000 4Runner runs the old Toyota 4C fixed-code transponder in the key head, paired to the transponder ECU (part number 89780-35010 on most third-gen 4Runners). His key turned and started clean, no immobilizer light flicker on the dash. If that red security LED stays solid or blinks after you turn the key, the ECU is not reading the 4C chip and you are not going anywhere.
Whole visit took maybe fifteen minutes. He thought the truck was dying. It was a flat coin battery. I keep CR2032 cells and blank HYQ12BBX remotes stocked because these third-gen 4Runners are everywhere in Santa Barbara.
