A guy in Las Positas came up to me at a coffee spot on the east side of Santa Barbara because he recognized my van from a YouTube video. He'd been watching my Toyota key jobs for a while, had my number in his phone, and figured he'd say hello before he ever needed anything. That's the version I like.
A few months later he called. His 2000 4Runner fob had been losing range for weeks, down to about arm's length, and then it stopped responding entirely. He was manually unlocking and locking every time. Not the end of the world on this system since the key still turns the ignition just fine, but annoying enough that he finally made the call.
I met him on his street in Las Positas. First thing I did was pop the fob open right there on the hood. The CR2032 was still showing voltage but the positive contact clip had taken some stress, probably from the battery being pried out at some point instead of lifted. Cleaned the contacts, reseated a fresh CR2032 with good clip tension, tested range from across the street. Solid.
But I always test all the buttons before I close the job. Lock, unlock, and the other two. One of the secondary buttons had a lazy response, soft press didn't register, firm press did. That's a worn contact pad under the button, common on a fob this age. Cleaned it with contact cleaner and it came right.
He didn't need a new fob. He needed the right fifteen minutes of attention. That's the job a lot of the time on a vehicle this age.
