Out at Ventura Harbor, the parking lot near the marina docks is where I met a guy who had been dealing with an intermittent no-start for three days on his 2010 4Runner.

He thought it was the battery. He replaced the car battery. Still intermittent. He thought it was a starter issue. He got a quote. Then a friend told him to look at the key, and that is when he called me.

The fob shell was cracked right at the top corner where the key ring loop meets the housing. Not obvious unless you rotated it in the light. That crack had let enough moisture in to pit one of the battery contacts, and the CR2016 was sitting at an angle instead of flat. The transponder side of the key was still intact, but with that contact not making a clean connection, the car was getting inconsistent signal and occasionally refusing to authorize the start.

I opened it on the tailgate, cleaned the contact points, seated a fresh CR2016 correctly, and tested the remote functions. Lock, unlock, panic. All three came back clean. Started the truck four times in a row without a hiccup.

Then I showed him the crack and told him the shell was going to get worse. We talked about a replacement key so he had a proper backup before the housing gave out entirely. He had been driving one key for years, which is how most people end up in a parking lot with a problem instead of at home with a spare.

The dealer had already quoted him a wait and a price that made him wince. Getting it sorted on site, in the lot, in about forty minutes, was a different experience entirely.
