I was parked near Carpinteria State Beach on a Tuesday, wrapping up another job, when a call came in from a woman whose 2008 4Runner had started acting strange. It would fire up fine in the morning, run all day, then by evening it would crank and die after about two seconds. She had already had a key made by someone else about ten days earlier. She was convinced it was an electrical problem, maybe a relay, maybe a fuel issue.
I drove over to her.
The key looked fine at a glance. Cut correctly, fob shell in good shape. But when I read the transponder chip, it was the wrong generation for this vehicle. Toyota's immobilizer on this platform is not forgiving about that. The first couple of starts, it passes. Then the system runs a deeper check, and a mismatched chip fails that verification quietly. No warning light, no obvious error. The engine just stops cooperating.
I programmed a new key with the correct transponder chip matched to her specific vehicle and cleared the old key out of the system so the bad one could not interfere. Tested it across several start cycles on site, right there off Linden Avenue.
She had been ready to book a tow. The dealer never came up until she asked what they would have charged. I told her a good chunk more than she paid me, and that they would have wanted the vehicle brought in. Neither of those things made sense for a job I could do at the curb in about forty minutes.
The key has been solid since. The difference between a key that works and one that works for a week is getting the chip right the first time.
