Mirai Key Systems by Year
1st Generation (JPD10)
Your first gen Mirai uses a 4-button smart proximity key with FCC ID HYQ14FBA and a CR2032 battery. It runs Toyota's Proximity Immobilizer Type 3/5 system, which means push-button start and keyless entry through proximity sensors. Programming is done through the OBD-II port, and no dealer PIN is required for add-a-key or all-keys-lost jobs.
1st Generation (JPD10) Continued
Your 2018 or 2019 Mirai carries the same HYQ14FBA smart key and Prox Type 3/5 immobilizer as the earlier years. Toyota kept the system identical. Same 4-button layout, same CR2032 battery, same OBD-II programming method. If you have had a Mirai key before, this one works exactly the same way.
1st Generation (JPD10) Final Year
Your 2020 Mirai rounds out the first generation with no changes to the key system. Still the HYQ14FBA 4-button smart key with Prox Type 3/5 immobilizer. Still OBD-II programmable on-site. Toyota kept things consistent across the entire JPD10 platform, which makes our job straightforward and keeps your cost down.
2nd Generation (JPD20)
The redesigned second-gen Mirai moved to a 4-button smart proximity key with FCC ID HYQ14FLA and a tighter immobilizer than the first generation. You still keep the fob in your pocket and start with the button, but the security handshake is stricter. We program these on-site with the right diagnostic tools.
Which Key Does Your Mirai Use?
This is a black proximity fob with silver trim and the Toyota logo. You never insert it; just keep it in your pocket and press the start button. There is a hidden emergency blade inside for manual door entry.
Identical fob to the 2016-2017 models. Same shape, same buttons, same internal electronics. If someone hands you a Mirai key from any year in this range, it looks exactly the same.
Same smart key as every other first-gen Mirai. Four buttons, proximity entry, push-button start. The emergency blade tucked inside the fob fits the driver's door if your battery ever dies.
The second-generation fob for the redesigned JPD20 Mirai. Same pocket-and-push-button feel, but it carries the HYQ14FLA electronics and a tighter immobilizer than the first gen. The emergency blade inside opens the door if the battery dies.
Mirai Key Replacement Pricing
Price includes the key blank, blade cutting, OBD-II programming, and testing; all-keys-lost jobs are at the higher end of the range.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Getting a spare before you lose your only key is the cheapest insurance there is. Here is how we compare.
Common Mirai Key Problems
Smart Key Battery Failure
First check is the CR2032 inside your fob. A weak battery causes proximity sensors to miss the key intermittently. Swap every 12-18 months and the problem goes away. We carry CR2032s on every call and can replace yours during any service visit.
Transponder Programming Errors
If someone used the wrong procedure or a tool not NASTF-registered for Toyota's Prox Type 3/5 system, the immobilizer rejects the key entirely. We use Autel IM608 and Toyota Techstream with proper NASTF credentials, so programming sticks the first time.
Blade Wear on Emergency Insert
Your Mirai's emergency blade gets sticky or refuses to turn in the driver's door cylinder. That little metal key inside the fob takes a beating over time. We cut a fresh replacement blade on-site so you always have a working backup when the fob battery dies.
Can You Program a Mirai Key Yourself?
No DIY self-programming procedure exists for the Mirai. Toyota's Prox Type 3/5 immobilizer requires OBD-II diagnostic tools like Techstream or an Autel IM608 to register new smart keys. You need a locksmith or dealer for this one.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the 2016-2020 Mirai uses the exact same style 4-button smart key (HYQ14FBA) operating at 315 MHz that you would find on a conventional Toyota sedan. Despite running a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain that produces nothing but water vapor, Toyota kept the key system completely familiar. The future of automotive power, paired with a key fob your Camry-driving neighbor would recognize instantly.
