2020 Toyota Mirai
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2020 Mirai?

The smart key is a proximity fob. You carry it, and the car detects it when you're close. Touch the door handle to unlock, press the start button inside to run the vehicle. There's also an emergency metal blade folded into the fob for situations where the fob battery is dead or the door handle sensor isn't responding. The fob has 4 buttons for remote functions.

Q: How long does Toyota dealer key replacement actually take for a 2020 Mirai?

Longer than the estimate they usually give you. Officially it's framed as a same-day or next-day job, but Mirai owners in particular run into a parts availability issue. The Mirai has always had lower production volume than mainstream Toyota models, and some dealers that rarely see one will need to order the fob. That can push the wait out several days. If you're already without a working key, you're also looking at a tow just to get there.

Q: I only have one key for my 2020 Mirai. If I lose it, can a new key still be made from scratch?

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2020 Mirai is a job we can handle. It takes a bit longer than adding a spare because the immobilizer registration process starts fresh rather than adding to an existing working key. The old lost fob gets cleared from the system so it can't be used to start the car. Then the new key gets registered and the emergency blade gets cut.

Q: My Mirai shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What else could cause that?

A few things. First, battery seating. If the CR1632 got put in slightly off-axis or the contact tab got bent during the swap, you can have a fresh battery that still reads as weak or absent to the car. Open the fob, reseat the battery, and check that both contacts are making clean, even pressure. If that's not it, the issue could be on the vehicle side.

2020 Toyota Mirai Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman who works near the North Ranch area of Thousand Oaks. She'd had her 2020 Mirai for a while and wanted a spare key made before she needed one badly. Smart thinking. The kind of call I actually like getting because there's no stress attached to it.

She'd already called the dealer. The number she got back was enough that she decided to look around first. I told her I could come to her during lunch.

When I pulled up, she was curious about the process. The Mirai is a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, which turns a few heads in a parking lot, but from a key system standpoint it's treated the same as Toyota's other smart key vehicles. Proximity fob, touch-sensitive door handles, a start button inside. The factory fob ID on her key matched what I'd brought with me.

I connected to the OBD port, ran through Toyota's immobilizer registration sequence with my diagnostic equipment, and the new fob paired without a fight. Cut the emergency blade on my machine, tested the insert in the door cylinder, walked every button, confirmed touch unlock on both front handles, confirmed the start button saw the new fob. The whole thing ran about 40 minutes.

She now has a working spare sitting in a drawer at home. Cost her a fraction of what the dealer quoted. And she didn't lose a half day driving across town.

Toyota Mirai Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Toyota dealer to get a replacement smart key for a 2020 Mirai?▼

No. A qualified mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic equipment can cut and program a replacement smart key on site. The dealer route means scheduling, possible towing if you're already locked out or have no working key, and a wait that can stretch to a day or more depending on parts availability.
