2018 Toyota Mirai Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from someone in the Botanic Garden Area of Thousand Oaks. Not a typical key call. The vehicle was a 2018 Toyota Mirai, hydrogen fuel cell, push-button start, and zero working fobs. He had been to the Toyota dealer first. They quoted him a wait for the part to be ordered, plus fees he wasn't expecting, and he left without a key.
The Mirai doesn't get the same volume of locksmith calls as a Camry or Corolla. It's a low-production hydrogen vehicle, and some locksmiths pass on it. I didn't. The fob is a 4-button proximity unit with a factory FCC ID and a dealer part number on file. The key system itself talks to the vehicle's immobilizer through the OBD port, and all-keys-lost on a push-button Toyota means the old key data has to be cleared before the replacement fob can be enrolled. No ignition cylinder to fall back on.
I pulled up outside his place, ran the all-keys-lost sequence through my diagnostic equipment, enrolled the new fob, and tested every function: door handle touch unlock on both sides, the start button, and all four buttons on the fob. Everything confirmed.
He mentioned the dealer told him the job required the car to come in. It didn't. Right tools, current software, parking lot of his building. Done.
