2018 Toyota Mirai
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is a mobile locksmith cheaper than going to the Toyota dealer for this?

On a 2018 Mirai, yes, usually by a significant margin. Dealers price smart key jobs for low-volume vehicles higher than mainstream models because parts ordering and programming time both factor in. A mobile locksmith with the right equipment and the correct fob in stock cuts out the overhead, the appointment wait, and the part-sourcing delay. Most Mirai owners who call us after getting a dealer quote tell us they saved a good chunk.

Q: Does the price include cutting and programming?

Yes, everything. The fob itself, the emergency insert blade cut to your vehicle, enrolling the fob through the diagnostic port, and a full function test before I leave. The Mirai is a push-button start vehicle, so there's no ignition cylinder to cut for, but the emergency insert blade inside the fob still needs to be cut in case you need manual door entry. Dealers often bill each of those steps separately. One call to us, one price, done on site.

Q: Can I program a replacement Mirai fob myself at home?

No. The 2018 Mirai uses a push-button proximity system with no ignition cylinder, which means there is no onboard add-a-key sequence you can run yourself. Enrolling a new fob requires professional diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. If you already bought a fob online, it will not pair to the car without that step. Bring the fob, we bring the tools.

Q: My Mirai start button isn't responding to the fob even though the battery is new. What's going on?

A few things to check before assuming the fob is dead or the car needs a dealer visit. First, confirm the battery is the correct type seated correctly. The Mirai fob takes a CR1632, which is a thinner cell than what's in most other Toyota fobs. A wrong battery type or one sitting slightly off-center can cause exactly this symptom. Second, try holding the fob directly against the start button and pressing.

2018 Toyota Mirai Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from someone in the Botanic Garden Area of Thousand Oaks. Not a typical key call. The vehicle was a 2018 Toyota Mirai, hydrogen fuel cell, push-button start, and zero working fobs. He had been to the Toyota dealer first. They quoted him a wait for the part to be ordered, plus fees he wasn't expecting, and he left without a key.

The Mirai doesn't get the same volume of locksmith calls as a Camry or Corolla. It's a low-production hydrogen vehicle, and some locksmiths pass on it. I didn't. The fob is a 4-button proximity unit with a factory FCC ID and a dealer part number on file. The key system itself talks to the vehicle's immobilizer through the OBD port, and all-keys-lost on a push-button Toyota means the old key data has to be cleared before the replacement fob can be enrolled. No ignition cylinder to fall back on.

I pulled up outside his place, ran the all-keys-lost sequence through my diagnostic equipment, enrolled the new fob, and tested every function: door handle touch unlock on both sides, the start button, and all four buttons on the fob. Everything confirmed.

He mentioned the dealer told him the job required the car to come in. It didn't. Right tools, current software, parking lot of his building. Done.

Toyota Mirai Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2018 Toyota Mirai key replacement cost?▼

Call us for exact pricing, but it will be a fraction of what the dealer quoted you. Toyota dealer pricing on smart key replacement for lower-volume models like the Mirai tends to run high once they add the fob cost, programming labor, and any diagnostic time they charge separately. With EZ Car Keyz, one price covers the fob, programming to your vehicle, and mobile service to your location in Thousand Oaks. No line-item surprises.
