Out in Wildwood, in Thousand Oaks, I got a call around 2am from a Mirai owner who had been staring at his driveway for about twenty minutes trying to figure out his next move.
His only fob had stopped communicating with the car. Push the start button, nothing. The dash threw up a key-not-detected warning. He figured his only path was a tow, a dealer appointment, and probably two or three days without his car. He had already started looking up tow services when he found me.
I told him to stay put.
The Mirai is not a common car. It runs on hydrogen, the ownership numbers are small, and most people assume that adds up to a nightmare when something goes wrong with the key. It does not have to.
I pulled up to his driveway, connected to the OBD port, and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for his vehicle security system. The process reads the immobilizer data, works through the key registration sequence, and gets a new fob paired from scratch. His factory FCC ID fob, four buttons, programmed and tested on site. Start button worked. Door handles responded. Every function confirmed before I packed up.
The whole thing was done before 3am. He never needed a tow. The dealer comparison came up briefly and he just shook his head. He had already gotten a rough quote in his head from their website. What he paid me was a fraction of that.
The Mirai is unusual in a lot of ways. The key job does not have to be one of them.
