Yes. All Oldsmobile models use GM platform key systems that are well-supported in the locksmith aftermarket. Whether you need a standard mechanical key for a classic Cutlass or Toronado, a VATS resistor key for a mid-1980s to mid-1990s 88 or Custom Cruiser, a Passlock transponder for an Alero or Intrigue, or a proximity fob for a 2001 through 2003 Aurora, we carry the hardware. The fact that Oldsmobile production ended in 2004 does not affect our ability to service any generation.

VATS stands for Vehicle Anti-Theft System. It uses a resistor pellet embedded in the key blade rather than a transponder chip in the head. The ignition reads the resistance and disables the fuel and starter if it does not match. Oldsmobile used VATS on models like the Delta 88, Cutlass, and Toronado from roughly the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s. There are 15 possible resistance values and the key must match exactly. A correctly cut key without the right resistor will turn in the ignition but the engine will not crank. We measure the correct value and cut a matching key on site.

Passlock is GM's sensor-based immobilizer system used on Oldsmobile models from the late 1990s through 2004, including the Alero, Intrigue, and Silhouette. It reads the key through a magnetic sensor in the ignition cylinder rather than a chip in the key itself. When the steering column wiring degrades over the 20-plus years these vehicles have been on the road, the sensor loses sync and the security light stays on, preventing the car from starting. The fix is either a Passlock relearn procedure, a wiring repair, or ignition cylinder replacement. We diagnose which applies and handle all three on site.

Yes. The Aurora from 2001 through 2003 has a proximity smart key and uses a three-cycle ignition programming sequence for all-keys-lost. Each cycle requires holding the ignition in the On position for ten and a half minutes, repeated three times for a total of about 30 to 35 minutes. This erases all prior keys and registers the new one. No dealer visit or tow is required. For Alero and Intrigue all-keys-lost situations, the Passlock relearn and PK3 transponder programming are handled on site with our GM tooling.

It depends on the year. Pre-1985 Oldsmobiles just need a cut key with no programming. VATS-era models from the mid-1980s through mid-1990s need a key cut to the correct resistance value but no electronic programming. From 1997 onward, Passlock and PK3 transponder-equipped models require both the correct blade cut and an electronic programming step to bind the key to the vehicle. A correctly cut but unprogrammed key will turn in the ignition but the car will not start. We handle both the cut and the programming in a single visit.

The most common cause is a dead or failing CR2032 battery. On 1997 through 2004 GM fobs, a known design issue involves the solder joints on the battery clip loosening from age and vibration, causing intermittent power loss that looks like a dead battery but returns briefly with a fresh battery before failing again. The actual fix is resoldering three small joints inside the fob. We carry soldering equipment and can handle this on site. If the fob electronics have failed entirely, we program a replacement. No programming is needed after a battery swap alone.

An independent locksmith with the right GM tooling can handle every Oldsmobile ever produced. Pre-1985 models require only key cutting. VATS models require resistance measurement and blade cutting. Passlock and PK3 models from 1997 through 2004 require OBD-compatible programming, which we do on site with Tech2-compatible tooling. The Aurora proximity key uses a timed ignition cycle that requires no special dealer equipment at all. No Oldsmobile model requires exclusive dealer service, and most GM dealers will actually deprioritize these vehicles because they are discontinued.
