About Oldsmobile Keys

Oldsmobile key replacement overview in Ventura County

Oldsmobile stopped production in 2004, but the Cutlass, Delta 88, Alero, Intrigue, Aurora, and Bravada are still on Southern California roads. We carry the blanks and tooling for every Oldsmobile key system from classic VATS resistor keys through Passlock and PK3 transponders, and we make house calls.

Oldsmobile Keys Still Cut and Programmed On Site

Oldsmobile

Every Oldsmobile on the road today runs one of three GM security platforms depending on its year. Pre-1985 models use standard mechanical keys with no electronics at all. From the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s, most Oldsmobiles used VATS, the Vehicle Anti-Theft System, which embeds a resistor pellet in the key blade rather than a transponder chip. From 1997 through the final 2004 model year, the Alero, Intrigue, Silhouette, and Bravada moved to GM's Passlock system and PK3 transponder chips programmed to the BCM.

Oldsmobile Why Dealers Won't Prioritize These

Why Dealers Won't Prioritize These

The Aurora is the only Oldsmobile with a proximity smart key, which appeared on the 2001 through 2003 models and uses a 30-minute ignition-cycle programming sequence for all-keys-lost situations. Because Oldsmobile was discontinued, most GM dealers will not prioritize these vehicles or will charge a premium for parts research. We stock the blanks, carry the correct resistors for VATS vehicles, and handle all-keys-lost for every Oldsmobile generation without a dealer visit.

What Makes Oldsmobile Keys Different

Oldsmobile

Oldsmobile vehicles present a challenge that most locksmiths walk away from: the brand has been discontinued for over 20 years, the dealer network is functionally gone, and the vehicles span three completely different GM security architectures that each require a different approach.

Oldsmobile Three Platforms, Three Approaches

Three Platforms, Three Approaches

A 1988 Delta 88 needs a VATS resistor key where we measure the correct resistance value from the 15 possible options before cutting anything. A 1999 Alero needs a Passlock relearn and a PK3 transponder chip programmed via OBD. A 2002 Aurora needs a 30-minute three-cycle ignition sequence because that is the only way the push-to-start proximity system accepts a new key in an all-keys-lost situation. None of these overlap. Confuse the platform and you end up with a car that cranks and will not start, which is worse than where you started.

Oldsmobile Getting the Diagnosis Right

Getting the Diagnosis Right

The Alero specifically added a layer of confusion because Passlock does not put a chip in the key at all, it reads through the ignition cylinder, which means a key that looks correct and operates the lock will still not start the car if the sensor is out of sync. Getting that diagnosis right requires knowing the system well enough to distinguish a sync failure from a wiring fault from a cylinder failure before recommending anything. We have worked on enough of these to know the difference.

GM Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Oldsmobile dealer vs EZ Car Keyz pricing comparison

GM dealers that will service an Oldsmobile typically charge $230 to $500 for a transponder key replacement plus a $100 to $200 diagnostic fee, and many will tell you parts are unavailable or require a week to source. We stock hardware for every Oldsmobile generation and handle these on site for significantly less, with no runaround about discontinued parts.

Oldsmobile Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

Oldsmobile Passlock Security Light Causing No-Start
Passlock Security Light Causing No-Start
The most common Oldsmobile key complaint on the Alero, Intrigue, and Silhouette from 1997 through 2004. Passlock sensors in the ignition cylinder lose sync as the steering column wiring ages. The security light stays on and the car will not start even with the correct key. A relearn procedure, wiring repair, or cylinder replacement fixes it depending on what the diagnosis shows. We check all three before recommending parts.
Oldsmobile VATS Resistor Mismatch on Classic Models
VATS Resistor Mismatch on Classic Models
On Delta 88, Cutlass, and Toronado models from the mid-1980s through mid-1990s, a replacement key cut without the correct resistor value will turn in the ignition but the engine will not fire. VATS has 15 possible resistance values ranging from about 400 to nearly 12,000 ohms, and the key must match exactly. A wrong value triggers a lockout before the next attempt is allowed. We measure the correct value and cut a matching key on site without guesswork.
Oldsmobile Fob Solder Joint Failure on 1997 to 2004 Models
Fob Solder Joint Failure on 1997 to 2004 Models
A documented design issue on GM fobs from the Alero, Intrigue, and Aurora era involves the battery clip solder joints loosening from age and vibration. The result is intermittent power loss that looks like a dead battery but returns briefly after a new one is installed before failing again within days or weeks. The fix is resoldering three small joints inside the fob, which restores reliable contact. We carry soldering equipment and handle this on site.
Oldsmobile PK3 Transponder Not Recognized After Battery Disconnect
PK3 Transponder Not Recognized After Battery Disconnect
On Passlock and PK3-equipped Oldsmobiles from 1997 through 2004, disconnecting the vehicle battery can occasionally cause the BCM to require the key to be relearned. The car cranks but does not start and the security indicator stays lit. This is different from a Passlock sensor failure and requires a programming step rather than a relearn procedure. We diagnose the difference on site before recommending any action.

Pro Tip

Oldsmobile pro tip

If you drive a 1997 through 2004 Oldsmobile Alero, Intrigue, or Silhouette and your car occasionally will not start while showing the security light, do not immediately call a locksmith or a tow truck. The Passlock system on these vehicles has a built-in relearn procedure you can perform yourself. Turn the ignition to the On position without cranking the engine and wait for the security light to go out, which takes about 10 minutes. Turn the key off, wait 10 seconds, and repeat the cycle two more times. On the fourth attempt the car should start.

Oldsmobile When The Relearn Is Not Enough

When The Relearn Is Not Enough

If it does, the fix held temporarily but the underlying wiring or sensor is degrading and will need proper attention eventually. If the relearn does not hold or the problem keeps coming back within weeks, the ignition cylinder magnetic sensor or the steering column wiring has failed and needs to be replaced rather than reset again.

Oldsmobile Spare Key Saves Time and Money

Spare Key Saves Time and Money

Also worth knowing for Oldsmobile owners: make a copy of your existing key before anything happens to it. VATS resistors are measured from the original key or the ignition, and while we can do that measurement on site, having a spare cuts the cost and time of any future job in half.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
