How Alero Keys Changed Over the Years
Early 1st Gen: PK3 Transponder
A mechanical key paired with GM's Passlock II security system. There is no transponder chip in the key; instead, a resistance-based sensor inside the ignition cylinder verifies the key when you turn it. No remote built into the key on these early models, just a separate fob. A Passlock relearn after any key or cylinder service is required, which we handle with a scan tool.
Mid 1st Gen: PK3+ Transition
A mechanical key, same as 1999-2001, running on the same Passlock II resistance sensor in the ignition cylinder. Same blade, same separate 3-button remote fob with a CR2032 battery. After replacing the cylinder or adding a new key, the BCM needs the 10-minute Passlock relearn we perform on-site.
Late 1st Gen: Remote Head Key
A remote head key that combines the mechanical key and the 3-button remote into one unit. Still uses the Passlock II resistance sensor in the ignition cylinder (no transponder chip in the key). Fewer things to carry, same Passlock relearn after service.
Which Key Does Your Alero Use?
A standard metal key with a Passlock-compatible blade. Your remote is a separate fob you carry alongside the key.
Identical to the 1999-2001 key. The Passlock II sensor and procedure stayed the same. Still a separate key and fob setup.
Your remote buttons are built into the key head. One piece to carry instead of two. Same Passlock II security as the earlier years.
Alero Key Cost Breakdown
Every price includes the key blank, blade cutting, transponder chip programming, and remote sync, all done at your location.

Common Alero Key Problems
Transponder Chip Failure
You turn the key and the security light flashes. Engine cranks but will not fire. After 20 years of heat cycles in a Simi Valley lot, the Passlock sensor in the cylinder loses its ability to read resistance. We test on-site and replace or bypass the cylinder.
Ignition Cylinder Wear
The N-body ignition cylinder is one of the most-replaced lock parts. Tumblers get sloppy, the key jiggles without catching, then will not turn. We extract the old cylinder, install a new one, and rekey to match your existing key, no whole new set needed.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
First check on a 2003-2004 remote head key that stopped locking: the CR2032. Seals on these one-piece fobs are not great, and moisture gets in. A fresh battery fixes it. If the circuit board has corrosion, we replace the whole remote head key on-site.
BCM Programming Lockout
On 2003-2004 Aleros, disconnecting the battery or jump-starting can cause the BCM to reject all keys until a relearn. Not a key problem. We connect our scan tool, run the PK3+ relearn with the correct PIN, and your existing keys work again.
Can You Program an Alero Key Yourself?
No DIY self-programming for transponder keys on any Alero. Passlock II requires a 10-minute relearn procedure with a scan tool after any key, cylinder, or BCM service. This is a locksmith or dealer job, no shortcuts.
You can pair the remote buttons yourself using a door cylinder switch and ignition key cycle procedure. This only programs the lock, unlock, and trunk buttons. It does not touch the transponder chip, so your key still needs professional programming to start the car.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the Oldsmobile Alero was the very last vehicle produced under the Oldsmobile name before GM discontinued the brand in 2004. That final Alero rolled off the line and closed the book on 107 years of Oldsmobile production. One of the longest runs in American automotive history, ended quietly with a compact sedan.
