2002 Oldsmobile Alero
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I found a fob online that matches my 2002 Alero. Can I just use the factory FCC ID to confirm it's the right one?

Yes, checking the factory FCC ID on the fob is a good way to confirm you have the right shell before buying. But buying the part is only step one. The replacement still has to be programmed to your specific car before it will do anything. An unprogrammed fob that matches the FCC ID perfectly will sit there and do nothing. If you already bought one, call us and we can program it on site.

Q: How fast can you get to Oxnard Shores?

Usually 15 to 25 minutes from the time you call. We dispatch whoever is closest, so if you're sitting in a parking lot near the water and need a fob programmed or a key cut, we're not asking you to schedule out three days. Call now and we're on the way now.

Q: My 2002 Alero remote stopped working but the key still starts the car fine. Are those two separate problems?

They are separate systems. The ignition key handles starting, and the remote handles the door locks and the other fob functions independently. It's common for the remote side to fail or drop out while the key side keeps working perfectly. So if your car starts fine but the fob does nothing, you're dealing with a remote issue only. That's usually a dead battery, a lost programming state, or a failed fob. None of those affect the ignition.

Q: Can I reprogram the Alero fob myself at home?

There is an onboard procedure for these. It involves a specific sequence using the door lock switch and the ignition, and it can work if you follow the steps correctly. The catch is that the procedure resets all previously programmed remotes, so if you have a second fob you want to keep, both have to go through the sequence in the same session or the first one gets erased. If you try it, have all your fobs ready at once.

2002 Oldsmobile Alero Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone parked near the water in Oxnard Shores. She was in the lot, done with work, and the fob just stopped responding. The key still turned, car still ran, but the remote was completely dead and she had no spare. She had already tried squeezing the buttons harder, which never helps but everyone tries it.

When I pulled up, she handed me the fob. CR2032 was reading low. Swapped it out, reseated it clean, tested range from about thirty feet. Still nothing. That told me the battery wasn't the whole story.

Went into the onboard programming procedure, cycled through it, got the fob to relearn. Then I walked the buttons one at a time: lock, unlock, and the other two. All four confirmed working before I closed anything up.

She asked if the key itself needed anything. It didn't. The ignition side was fine and the car had been starting without any issue. Just the remote had dropped out.

Total time on site was under thirty minutes. She mentioned she had almost called the dealer and then decided not to after she heard what they were going to charge. That part barely came up. The fix was already done.

Oldsmobile Alero Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What battery does the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero fob use?▼

CR2032. It's a common size and easy to find, but fit and contact matter as much as the battery itself. If the old one got pried out instead of popped, the contacts inside the fob can bend just enough to give you an intermittent connection. The remote works sometimes, then stops, and it looks like a bigger problem than it is. Every fob we deliver goes out with a fresh CR2032 seated and tested.
