Got a call from a guy near Centerpoint Mall in Oxnard. His 2000 Alero was sitting in the lot, doors locked, one dead remote in his hand. He had been pressing the buttons for five minutes straight. Nothing.
I asked the obvious question: when did you last change the battery? He said he had never changed it. This was the original CR2032 from the factory. Twenty-plus years in there.
I pulled up, popped the KOBUT1BT case open on the hood of his car, and the old battery had a white crust of corrosion around the edges. The contacts inside the remote housing had that same chalky film. Cleaned everything with a pencil eraser and some contact cleaner, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and pressed lock.
Nothing.
That is the thing about the Alero's remote system. When a KOBUT1BT loses power for a long time, the receiver module can drop it. Had to re-sync the remote to the body control module. On these GM J-bodies, there is a learn procedure through the BCM that takes about two minutes. Held lock and unlock together, got the chime confirmation, and all four buttons came back: lock, unlock, trunk, panic.
He just stood there turning the remote over in his hand like he forgot it could do things. Twenty years on one battery. That is almost impressive.
