Got a call from a guy near Fremont Square Shopping Center in Oxnard. His 2004 Alero remote had been dead for months. He had been manually unlocking the doors and popping the trunk with the key blade this whole time, just living with it.
He said he tried replacing the CR2032 himself. Twice. Same result: nothing. No click from the doors, no trunk pop, no LED flash on the fob. He figured the whole remote was fried.
I pulled up to where he was parked and popped the KOBLEAR1XT open on my kit. The battery terminals had a film of corrosion on them, just enough to kill the connection. Cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and hit the lock button. Thunk. All four doors. He just stood there for a second and then hit unlock, lock, unlock, lock, like he was making up for lost time.
Then I reprogrammed the remote to the body control module using the standard GM learn procedure: ignition on, hold lock and unlock on the fob, wait for the locks to cycle, done. Verified all four buttons. Lock, unlock, trunk release, panic.
The whole thing took maybe fifteen minutes. He had been ready to buy a new remote online and then pay a dealer to program it, which would have meant towing the car or driving it over there. Instead he got it handled on site for a fraction of that.
