Post-2021 models and the E-Pace and I-Pace with bench-required RFA modules may have additional steps that we confirm from your VIN before scheduling. No Jaguar model is strictly dealer-only, but later platforms require specialized bench access that goes beyond a basic OBD connection.

Jaguar's Instrument Cluster immobilizer erases all existing key registrations before beginning a new programming session. The system then requires at least two keys to be learned before it considers the pairing complete and allows the car to start. This is a built-in security design, not a limitation of the tools. It means that if you come to us with one existing working key and need a spare, we bring two blanks to the appointment so the existing key and the new key are both programmed through the IC learning sequence together. Replace the CR2032 battery in the fob first. Jaguar fob batteries tend to show no warning until they are nearly dead, and a fob that appeared to be working normally the day before can lose enough voltage overnight in cooler temperatures to drop below the detection threshold. If a fresh battery does not resolve it, try the emergency start procedure: hold the fob flat with buttons facing outward against the key symbol indentation on the lower left side of the steering column, press the brake, and push the Start/Stop button. On XJ models the backup fob location is in the fascia below the fog light switch area rather than the steering column. If both fobs fail simultaneously with fresh batteries, the issue is vehicle-side rather than the fobs.

Jaguar issued a service technical bulletin covering certain 2005 model year fobs for an intermittent failure caused by static electricity from the internal foam cushioning inside the fob housing. The fix involved inserting an anti-static pad. The recall notification was reportedly inconsistent and not all affected owners were contacted. If you have a 2005 Jaguar with an unreliable fob that has not responded to battery replacement, checking with a Jaguar dealer for any open recall by VIN is worth doing before replacing the fob outright.

This is a documented 2015 XF issue involving the auxiliary battery system. When the auxiliary battery fails to properly communicate with the main battery system, it can produce complete key fob and central locking failure that looks identical to a dead or failed fob. In these cases the fob tests as functional and shows as registered in the system, but the locking and starting functions still fail. The auxiliary battery itself, not the fob or the programming, is the actual fault. A Jaguar-knowledgeable technician can confirm this quickly with a diagnostic scan.

The Activity Key is a waterproof, battery-free wristband that Jaguar introduced as an optional accessory on the F-Pace. It works as a secondary key that can lock and unlock the vehicle without being paired to the traditional fob. Because it has no battery, it cannot be used for push-button starting, but it allows owners to leave their main fob locked in the car while doing activities where carrying a key fob would be impractical. Programming an Activity Key requires JLR diagnostic tools and is handled the same way as standard key fob pairing at our service call.
