About Jaguar Keys

Jaguar's proximity smart key system pairs the fob to the Instrument Cluster and the Keyless Vehicle Module as two separate programming steps, which is why key replacement costs $500 to $1,000 at the dealer. We program Jaguar XF, XJ, F-Type, F-Pace, and XK keys on-site using JLR SDD-compatible and Autel tools, without the tow or the dealer appointment.
Jaguar Proximity Key Programming, Done at Your Location

Jaguar has been building smart proximity keys into its lineup since the 2003 XJ X350, making it one of the earliest adopters of push-button start in the segment. Every Jaguar built after 1995 requires a programmed transponder to start, and any push-button start model requires pairing the fob to both the Instrument Cluster for immobilizer authorization and the Keyless Vehicle Module for remote entry functions, a two-step process that requires JLR-specific diagnostic tools.

Two-Key Minimum and On-Site Service
We use Autel IM608 and JLR SDD-compatible programmers that handle both pairing steps on-site for XF, XJ, F-Type, F-Pace, XE, and XK platforms from 2006 through 2021 without towing. One important note about Jaguar IC programming: the system erases all previously registered keys before learning new ones, which means a minimum of two keys must be present and programmed during any session. We always bring at least two blanks on a Jaguar call for this reason.
What the Jaguar Dealer Experience Is Really Like

The Jaguar dealer key replacement experience is shaped by the platform's two-step programming requirement and its relatively low dealer network density in Southern California. Jaguar dealers charge $500 to $1,000 for proximity key replacement, and Southern California locations tend toward the upper end of that range. For all-keys-lost situations, the vehicle must be present for the Instrument Cluster pairing sequence, which means towing is almost always required rather than optional.

The Two-Key Pricing Catch
Most dealers will also charge a $50 to $150 diagnostic fee before beginning any key work. The wait for an appointment on a non-emergency basis typically runs one to three days. The more distinctive aspect of the Jaguar dealer process is the minimum-two-key requirement: because the IC erases all existing registrations before beginning the learning session, any all-keys-lost service results in two new keys rather than one, which is factored into the pricing from the start.

One Visit, Two Keys, One Price
We carry two Jaguar blanks on every appointment, complete both the IC and KVM pairing steps on-site, and deliver two working keys at the end of the visit for one flat price that significantly undercuts the dealer total.
Jaguar Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Jaguar dealers charge $500 to $1,000 for smart proximity key replacement, with towing required for all-keys-lost situations and a $50 to $150 diagnostic fee before any work begins. We program both the Instrument Cluster and the Keyless Vehicle Module on-site at your location, with blanks in hand, for a fraction of that total.

What Makes Jaguar Keys Different

Jaguar's key history includes something no other mainstream brand has: the Tibbe key. Introduced around 1990 on models like the XJS facelift, the Tibbe is a high-security mechanical key with multi-pin side cuts along both flat surfaces of the blade rather than the edge cuts used by virtually every other manufacturer. The design made Jaguar keys nearly impossible to duplicate by sight or photograph and extremely resistant to picking, giving Jaguar vehicles a meaningful mechanical security advantage years before electronic transponders became standard. Tibbe keys remained in use on Jaguar through the late 1990s and into the early 2000s on X300, X308, and XK8 platforms, and they require a specialized cutting machine rather than a standard automotive key cutter. They were fully phased out across the lineup by 2013 as proximity smart keys became universal.

Two-Fob Security by Design
On the programming side, Jaguar is also unusual in that it was among the first to require two-fob minimum programming as a security design, rather than allowing a single spare to be added independently. This architecture means losing all keys on a Jaguar is more involved than on most other brands, but it also means a thief who obtains one key cannot silently add additional copies without triggering the IC learning process that wipes all existing registrations.
Pro Tip

Jaguar's emergency start backup location is one of the most model-specific in the industry and is worth knowing before you are stranded with a dead fob. On the F-Pace, E-Pace, I-Pace, XF, and XE, hold the fob flat with the buttons facing outward against the key symbol indentation on the lower left side of the steering column near your left knee, press the brake, and push start.

The XJ Backup Is Different
On the XJ, the backup location is different: it is the fascia area below the fog light and auxiliary switch pack rather than the steering column. These are not interchangeable, and trying the steering column location on an XJ will not produce a start. On all models, the fob's transponder chip communicates passively without any battery, so a completely dead or even removed battery does not prevent this method from working.

Getting In Before You Start
Use the emergency blade inside the fob to unlock the driver's door first via the small covered slot to the right of the door handle. The alarm will sound on entry but will stop once the engine starts successfully.
Jaguar Owners on Our Service
"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."
Gordon Harada"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"
Traci Thomas"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
