About Subaru Keys

Subaru key replacement overview in Ventura County

Subaru rolled out its immobilizer system model-by-model starting in 2005, and Keyless Access with push-button start starting in 2013. We program replacement keys and smart fobs for every Subaru generation on site, without a dealer visit.

Every Subaru Key Generation, From Transponder to Keyless Access

Subaru

Subaru's key history is unusually well-documented and the transitions happened on a very specific schedule. Pre-2005 models used standard keys with no chip. Starting in 2005, Subaru phased in its immobilizer on the performance and premium trims first: the STI, Forester XT, Legacy GT, and Outback XT. By 2009 it was standard on every Subaru sold in the US. The 2008 to 2012 generation added high-security laser-cut blades that cannot be duplicated at a hardware store.

Subaru The Keyless Access Era

The Keyless Access Era

Keyless Access with push-button start arrived on the BRZ, Legacy, and Outback starting in 2013, and by 2015 to 2016 it was standard across the Impreza, Crosstrek, Forester, WRX, and the rest of the lineup.

Subaru Outback Key Replacement

Subaru

The Outback is the most common Subaru on Southern California roads and the model we handle most often for key replacement. It has gone through every key generation Subaru ever made. Fourth-generation Outbacks from 2010 to 2014 use high-security laser-cut transponder keys with immobilizers that require professional OBD programming to add or replace.

Subaru Keyless Access Generations

Keyless Access Generations

The fifth-generation from 2015 onward introduced Keyless Access with push-button start, and the single-sided inside-cut laser emergency blade that comes with it cannot be duplicated at a hardware store. Sixth-generation Outbacks from 2020 onward include automatic door locking tied to the keyless system and smart fobs that pair remotely to the vehicle.

Subaru Outback All-Keys-Lost On Site

Outback All-Keys-Lost On Site

For all-keys-lost situations on any Outback with an immobilizer, the VIN-specific security code is required to register new keys. We obtain that code and complete the programming on site in a single visit, typically in under an hour.

Subaru Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Subaru dealer vs EZ Car Keyz pricing comparison

Subaru dealer key replacement starts at $200 or more for the fob alone before programming, and all-keys-lost situations typically require the dealer's immobilizer security code tied to your VIN. We handle the full job on site at your car.

Subaru Key Problems We Fix

Sound familiar? We handle all of these -on site, same day.

Subaru Dead Fob Battery Triggering 'Access Key Not Detected'
Dead Fob Battery Triggering 'Access Key Not Detected'
The most common Subaru service call. All Subaru Keyless Access fobs use a CR2032 battery, and when it dies the dash displays 'Access Key Not Detected' at startup. The fix is usually a two-minute battery swap. The backup start procedure, holding the fob against the Start/Stop button, works immediately and does not require any tools.
Subaru Fob Desync After Battery Change or Car Battery Work
Fob Desync After Battery Change or Car Battery Work
Replacing the fob battery or disconnecting the car battery can occasionally cause the fob to lose sync with the vehicle, leaving you with buttons that do nothing even with a fresh battery. This is a reprogramming issue, not a hardware failure. For pre-2015 models with remote head keys, a manual ignition-cycle sequence often restores the sync. For 2015 and newer Keyless Access fobs, professional OBD tools are needed.
Subaru All Keys Lost - Immobilizer Code Required
All Keys Lost - Immobilizer Code Required
Subaru's immobilizer requires the vehicle's security code to register new keys when no working key exists. This code is VIN-specific and stored with Subaru's records. Dealers charge a premium for this service and typically require the car on site. We obtain the security code through professional locksmith data channels and complete the job at your location.
Subaru Laser-Cut Blade Cannot Be Copied at a Hardware Store
Laser-Cut Blade Cannot Be Copied at a Hardware Store
Starting in 2009 to 2010, Subaru moved to high-security laser-cut blades on its transponder and Keyless Access keys. These inside-cut, single-sided profiles cannot be duplicated by standard key-cutting machines at hardware stores or box retailers. Copying the blade requires specialist equipment, which we carry on every call.

Pro Tip

Subaru pro tip

Subaru made the backup start procedure the same across every single push-button start model in the lineup, which is genuinely useful to know. Whether you drive an Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, Ascent, Impreza, Legacy, WRX, BRZ, or Solterra, the procedure is identical: hold the fob flat against the Start/Stop button, press the brake, and press the button. The button contains a passive RFID antenna that reads the chip inside the fob at contact range regardless of battery level. You will see 'Access Key Not Detected' on the dash when this is needed.

Subaru No Slot, Just The Button

No Slot, Just The Button

There is no dedicated fob port or slot anywhere in the center console on any Subaru model. The start button is the only backup access point.

Subaru Finding the Hidden Blade

Finding the Hidden Blade

Also worth knowing: the hidden mechanical blade is released by pressing the small silver tab on the back of the fob. It gives you access to the driver-side door handle keyhole, which is the only door with a manual lock cylinder.

Subaru Key Fob Battery Guide

Subaru How to Open

How to Open

Press the small silver release tab on the back of the fob and slide out the hidden mechanical key blade. With the blade removed, use the tip of the blade itself or a plastic pry tool to work the seam on the back of the fob body. The case slides or pops apart to reveal the battery.
CR2032
Subaru Battery Type

Battery Type

All Subaru Keyless Access and push-button start fobs from 2010 onward use a CR2032. Replacing the battery does not require reprogramming. The RFID chip inside the fob is passive and holds its pairing without power. If the fob does not respond immediately after a fresh battery, check that the contacts inside the case are clean and making solid contact with the battery. On older 2010 to 2014 fobs the seam can be tight, so work slowly around the perimeter rather than prying hard at one point. No special tools are needed.

Subaru Owners on Our Service

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."

Gordon Harada
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"

Traci Thomas
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
