About Subaru Keys

Subaru rolled out its immobilizer system model-by-model starting in 2005, and Keyless Access with push-button start starting in 2013. We program replacement keys and smart fobs for every Subaru generation on site, without a dealer visit.
Every Subaru Key Generation, From Transponder to Keyless Access

Subaru's key history is unusually well-documented and the transitions happened on a very specific schedule. Pre-2005 models used standard keys with no chip. Starting in 2005, Subaru phased in its immobilizer on the performance and premium trims first: the STI, Forester XT, Legacy GT, and Outback XT. By 2009 it was standard on every Subaru sold in the US. The 2008 to 2012 generation added high-security laser-cut blades that cannot be duplicated at a hardware store.

The Keyless Access Era
Keyless Access with push-button start arrived on the BRZ, Legacy, and Outback starting in 2013, and by 2015 to 2016 it was standard across the Impreza, Crosstrek, Forester, WRX, and the rest of the lineup.

Your Subaru Key Job, On Site
All of this means the right approach to your key replacement depends entirely on the model and year. We carry the tools for every generation and handle the full job at your location.
Subaru Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

Subaru dealer key replacement starts at $200 or more for the fob alone before programming, and all-keys-lost situations typically require the dealer's immobilizer security code tied to your VIN. We handle the full job on site at your car.

Pro Tip

Subaru made the backup start procedure the same across every single push-button start model in the lineup, which is genuinely useful to know. Whether you drive an Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, Ascent, Impreza, Legacy, WRX, BRZ, or Solterra, the procedure is identical: hold the fob flat against the Start/Stop button, press the brake, and press the button. The button contains a passive RFID antenna that reads the chip inside the fob at contact range regardless of battery level. You will see 'Access Key Not Detected' on the dash when this is needed.

No Slot, Just The Button
There is no dedicated fob port or slot anywhere in the center console on any Subaru model. The start button is the only backup access point.

Finding the Hidden Blade
Also worth knowing: the hidden mechanical blade is released by pressing the small silver tab on the back of the fob. It gives you access to the driver-side door handle keyhole, which is the only door with a manual lock cylinder.
Subaru Key Fob Battery Guide

How to Open

Battery Type
All Subaru Keyless Access and push-button start fobs from 2010 onward use a CR2032. Replacing the battery does not require reprogramming. The RFID chip inside the fob is passive and holds its pairing without power. If the fob does not respond immediately after a fresh battery, check that the contacts inside the case are clean and making solid contact with the battery. On older 2010 to 2014 fobs the seam can be tight, so work slowly around the perimeter rather than prying hard at one point. No special tools are needed.
Subaru Owners on Our Service
"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."
Gordon Harada"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"
Traci Thomas"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
