How the BRZ Key System Changed Over the Years
1st Gen (ZC6)
OBD-II programming makes this one straightforward. Your BRZ uses a 4-button remote head key with a G Chip (Texas 4D-60 80-bit transponder) and a high-security TR47 blade. We plug into the diagnostic port, program the chip, cut the blade, and you are driving. No push-button start on most trims, just a traditional turn-key ignition with modern immobilizer security behind it.
1st Gen Facelift (ZC6)
Subaru kept the same G Chip and HYQ12BBY fob but added push-button start on higher trims. Same OBD-II programming, same 4-button remote head key, same CR2016 battery. The big difference for you is that some trims now have keyless access, so we verify your exact setup by VIN before we roll out.
2nd Gen (ZD8)
This is where security got serious. Subaru switched to a 3-button smart proximity key with enhanced immobilizer protection and server authentication for programming. Your key uses a CR2032 battery and push-button start is standard. We can handle most of these on-site, but the server auth step adds time compared to the older models.
2nd Gen tS (STI-tuned)
The tS variant layers additional security on top of the already enhanced 2nd gen system. Same 3-button smart key and CR2032 battery, but programming requires dealer-level server access. We will tell you that upfront before we drive out. If your tS needs a key, call us at (805) 790-8162 and we will walk you through your options honestly.
Which Key Does Your BRZ Use?
Traditional key with built-in remote buttons. You insert the blade into the ignition to start the car. The G Chip transponder inside talks to your immobilizer every time you turn the key.
Same physical key as the earlier BRZ, but higher trims now include push-button start and keyless entry. The emergency blade still gets you in if the fob battery dies.
Slim fob that stays in your pocket. Walk up, grab the handle, press the button, and go. The hidden emergency blade pops out if your fob battery dies.
Same smart key form factor as the standard 2nd gen, but the STI-tuned tS has additional immobilizer security that requires dealer-level programming access.

Common BRZ Key Problems We See
Remote Head Key Blade Wear
People think the transponder died when the culprit is a worn blade. The TR47 high-security cut on your 2013-2021 BRZ wears with daily use, and cylinder wafers stop reading correctly. We inspect first; a fresh cut with your chip profile fixes it.
G-Chip Cloning Failures
When a Thousand Oaks customer says another locksmith "couldn't get the key to work," ask if they tried to clone the G Chip. The Texas 4D-60 80-bit chip in 2013-2020 BRZ doesn't clone reliably; it needs OBD-II generation. Autel IM608 with Subaru protocols.
Battery Drain from Fob
The CR2016 in your 2013-2020 BRZ fob drains fast in Ventura County heat. A stuck panic button or a hot car all day kills it in weeks. Swap it: face down, pry the seam with a coin, replace with fresh CR2016 positive-up. Still dead? Call us.
Smart Key Antenna Failure
Your 2022-2025 BRZ won't detect the smart key even though the fob battery is fine. Looks like a dead fob, but it's actually the proximity antenna in the car failing. Requires ECU-level diagnostics. We test on-site in Camarillo before you spend on parts.
Can You Program a BRZ Key Yourself?
No DIY option here. Your 2013-2021 BRZ requires professional OBD-II programming equipment with Subaru-specific protocols. You cannot teach a new key to this car at home.
You can pair a new remote to your 2023-2025 BRZ using an OBD-II programmer and a compatible app, but only if you already have at least one working key. This pairs the remote functions only. It does not program the transponder chip, and if all keys are lost, you need a professional.

Did You Know?
You would not guess it, but the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 share more than just a platform. Their 1st generation key fobs are completely cross-compatible, right down to the FCC ID (HYQ12BBY). Subaru and Toyota co-developed the car from the ground up, and the key system was one piece they never bothered to differentiate between the two badges.
