I got a call from a guy in the Matilija area of Ojai. He'd been out near the hills and somewhere between locking up and getting back to his 2020 BRZ, the smart key was gone. Not low battery gone. That handles the physical side. Then I connected through the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost sequence, which clears any previously registered fobs from the system and enrolls the new one as the primary key. The process has a timed step built in, so you don't rush it.
When it was done, he pressed the button, the door unlocked, he sat down, hit start, and the car turned over right there in Matilija. Took about 45 minutes total.
He'd already looked up what the dealer would charge. The gap between that number and what he paid me was enough that he mentioned it twice. I just reminded him he also didn't need a tow.
