2020 Subaru BRZ Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a guy in the Matilija area of Ojai. He'd been out near the hills and somewhere between locking up and getting back to his 2020 BRZ, the smart key was gone. Not low battery gone. Gone gone. He checked his jacket, his bag, retraced his steps. Nothing. One key. No spare. Car sitting there locked and he had nowhere to go.
He assumed it meant a tow to the dealer and a few days of waiting. He called me mostly to ask if that was really his only option.
It wasn't.
I got out there that afternoon. The BRZ has a side-milled lock cylinder, and I decoded it on site to get the correct blade cut without needing the original key or a key code on file. That handles the physical side. Then I connected through the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost sequence, which clears any previously registered fobs from the system and enrolls the new one as the primary key. The process has a timed step built in, so you don't rush it.
When it was done, he pressed the button, the door unlocked, he sat down, hit start, and the car turned over right there in Matilija. Took about 45 minutes total.
He'd already looked up what the dealer would charge. The gap between that number and what he paid me was enough that he mentioned it twice. I just reminded him he also didn't need a tow.
