2018 Subaru BRZ Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out near Hollister Village, a guy had just pulled over to take in the view when his day went sideways fast. The blade on his 2018 BRZ key snapped in the ignition. Clean break. Half of it was sitting in his hand, the other half was somewhere inside the cylinder.
He had already called another locksmith before he found me. That one told him the cylinder needed to come out, probably needed to be drilled, and he was looking at a new cylinder on top of everything else.
I showed up with my Lishi tool and worked the broken fragment out without touching the wafer surfaces. No scratching, no collateral damage. Once the fragment was out, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly. That gave me the exact cut depths I needed without having to reference anything external.
Cut the new blade from the decode, then connected to the OBD port and registered the new smart key to the vehicle's security system through the right software. The BRZ's Toyota-derived immobilizer does not forgive shortcuts here, so I ran a full confirmation cycle before calling it done.
He watched the whole thing from about three feet away, asking questions the whole time. The moment the engine turned over cleanly on the new key, he exhaled like he had been holding it since the snap. The cylinder looked the same as it did before I arrived. That other locksmith's plan would have left a different story entirely.
