Guy was passing through Goleta, stopped somewhere near Hollister Village Plaza, and snapped his key blade clean inside the ignition of his 2018 BRZ. Half the blade in his hand, the other half stuck in the cylinder.
He had already called another locksmith who told him the ignition cylinder needed to be drilled out. New cylinder, new key, whole assembly. He was looking at a big bill and a car sitting there for days waiting on parts.
I got there and used my HO01 Lishi to grab the broken fragment. No drilling, no scratching the wafer surfaces. Once the piece was out, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position for the exact cut depths. The BRZ uses the TOY43 keyway, same as its Toyota 86 twin, which is one of the reasons this platform trips people up. Looks like a Subaru, but the lock hardware and immobilizer architecture came straight from Toyota.
Cut a new blade from the decode. Programmed the H-chip transponder through the OBD port. Then tested the HYQ14AHC fob separately since on the ZC6 the remote functions and the transponder are independent of each other. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. All four buttons responded clean.
He watched the whole thing from about two feet away. When the engine turned over on the new key, he just nodded like he had been holding his breath.
