How Impreza Keys Changed Over 30 Years
1st Gen (GC/GF): Simple Metal Key
A plain mechanical key with no chip, no remote, no electronics at all. Your 1995 to 2000 Impreza uses a standard cut blade that any locksmith can duplicate in minutes. No immobilizer means no programming, which keeps the cost low and the job fast.
2nd Gen (GD/GG): Transponder Era Begins
A transponder key with an Subaru G chip inside the head, plus a three-button remote for locks. This is where Subaru added an immobilizer, so a plain metal copy will not start your car anymore. We program these on-board using a PIN code pulled from the vehicle, and the whole thing takes about 20 minutes.
3rd Gen (GE/GV): Remote Head Key
This is where security got serious. Your Impreza moved to Subaru's G chip (Texas 4D-60 80-bit), a high-security blade that cannot be duplicated at a hardware store, and a remote built right into the key head. Programming goes through the OBD-II port under your dash, which means professional tools are required.
4th Gen (GJ/GP): Remote Head Key with G Chip
Subaru consolidated into a 4-button remote head key with the G chip (Texas 4D-60 80-bit) and a high-security HU66 blade. The FCC ID is CWTWB1U811 (part number 57497-FJ021 / 57497-AL00A), and programming runs through OBD-II with a PIN code pulled from the ECU. CR1620 battery sits in the fob head.
5th Gen (GT/GK): Smart Key with Push-Button Start
A proximity smart key with Subaru's advanced transponder, a laser-cut emergency blade tucked inside, and push-button start. Your Impreza now requires server authentication for programming, which means the tool has to communicate with Subaru's central system. We handle this on-site with advanced equipment, no tow to the dealer needed.
Which Key Does Your Impreza Use?
A simple metal key with no buttons and no chip. If you can see it is just a plain key with nothing electronic, this is yours.
Looks like a regular key but has a thick plastic head with a chip inside. The three-button remote may be built in or separate. Your car will not start without the chip being recognized.
The remote buttons are built right into the key head, and the blade has a distinctive HU66 high-security profile. Thicker and heavier than the older keys.
A 4-button remote head key (lock, unlock, panic, trunk) with the G chip and remote electronics in the head, plus a non-folding high-security HU66 blade. CR1620 battery sits inside the fob head.
A rectangular fob that stays in your pocket. You push a button on the dash to start the car. There is a small emergency blade hidden inside the fob for manual door entry if the battery dies.

Common Impreza Key Problems
Transponder Failure
Turn the key and nothing happens. No crank, no start, just the immobilizer light. The transponder chip in the key head has failed, common on 2002-2011 Imprezas as electronics age. We read the immobilizer, program a new chip, and run on-site.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
Dead battery or jump start is the culprit. When Impreza voltage drops too low, the ECU and key can lose sync, and a good key won't start. Affects 2001-2016 models. We reset the immobilizer through OBD-II using the vehicle PIN.
Fob Battery Drain
We check the battery first, because nine times out of ten that's the whole problem. Impreza fobs from 2008+, especially WRX and STI trims, have higher idle current that eats batteries fast. Swap a quality CR2032 or CR1632. Still draining? We check internals.
High Security Blade Wear
People think the ignition is going bad when the real problem is a worn key blade. High-security blades on 2008-2021 Imprezas have tight tolerances; daily use grinds them down. We cut fresh from the original code, not a copy of a copy, so it fits like new.
Can You Program It Yourself?
No chip to program, so the key itself just needs cutting. If you have an aftermarket remote, you can pair it yourself using the key-cycle method: insert key, cycle ignition on and off three times, listen for the lock sound, then press the lock button within five seconds.
You can program the remote buttons yourself using the same key-cycle method. But the transponder chip inside the key requires professional tools and a PIN code. So you can make your fob lock and unlock the doors, but you cannot make a new key start the car without a locksmith.
Same deal as the second gen. Remote button pairing works with the key-cycle procedure, but the Subaru G chip transponder needs OBD-II programming with professional equipment. You will need us for the starting part.
If you buy an OBD programmer device and app, you can program both the transponder and remote yourself, as long as you have one working key. The aftermarket key must match the FCC ID of your original (CWTWB1U811). Without the programmer tool, you still need a locksmith for the chip.
No DIY option here. Your 2017 or newer Impreza uses proximity smart keys with rolling-code encryption that require server authentication. This is professional-only work, either a dealer or a locksmith with the right tools. We handle it on-site.

Did You Know?
The Impreza WRX STI keys from 2004 to 2007, the Hawkeye generation, often feature unique JDM-specific transponder chips that are not interchangeable with US models. So if you imported a right-hand-drive STI or bought JDM replacement keys online, they literally will not talk to your American car's immobilizer. A fun reminder that not all Subaru keys are created equal.
