A guy near Hummingbird Trailhead in Simi Valley flagged me down, so to speak, through a referral. His 2003 Impreza had a key done by another locksmith about a week earlier. It started fine for the first few days, then one evening the engine cranked and cranked but wouldn't catch. Next morning it fired right up. By the following night, same thing. Dead crank, security light blinking on the dash.
He thought the car had a fuel pump issue. Took it to a mechanic. Mechanic found nothing wrong and told him to check the key.
I pulled out my VVDI2, read the transponder in his key, and there it was. The other locksmith had cloned a 4D60 chip instead of the correct 4D62 that Subaru's immobilizer expects. A close relative in the Philips 4D family, close enough to fool the Body Integrated Unit on initial registration, but the rolling encryption handshake drifts and eventually the BIU rejects it. That's the intermittent no-start.
Cut a new key on a correct ID 4D62 blank, programmed it to the BIU through the OBD port, and swapped his CR2025 in the NHVWB1U711 remote while I was at it since it was reading low. Tested lock, unlock, trunk, panic. All four buttons responded clean.
He'd already spent money on a mechanic visit that found nothing. The whole problem was the wrong chip inside a key that looked perfectly fine.
