Rincon Point is one of those spots where a dead key fob stops being a minor inconvenience pretty fast. No nearby dealer, surf traffic on the 101, and most people out there are either visiting for the weekend or renting through someone else's arrangement.
That was the situation when a guy called me from a vacation rental off Rincon Point Road. He had driven down from somewhere inland for a long weekend and his only key had gone unreliable overnight. The fob would lock the doors from outside but the push-button start was reading it inconsistently. Sometimes it caught on the first press. Sometimes he had to hold the fob flat against the button to get it to register. He figured the key was dying.
When I got there I pulled the fob apart before doing anything else. The CR2032 showed low on the tester, not dead, just low enough to cause the antenna range to drop. On the 2023 Impreza that marginal battery behavior can look exactly like a pairing fault because the car still sees the key at close range but loses it at normal pocket distance.
Swapped the battery, reseated everything, and tested all four buttons plus the push-button start from a normal walking distance. Came back clean. He didn't need a new key at all.
He mentioned the rental host had already suggested calling the dealer and getting it towed to Santa Barbara. That would have been the next morning at the earliest, assuming they had the part. Instead he was back out on the water that afternoon.
The battery fix was the whole job. Sometimes that's what it is.
