2004 Subaru Impreza
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you wipe lost or stolen keys from my 2004 Subaru so they no longer start it?

Yes. When we do an all-keys-lost procedure, the immobilizer is cleared and only the keys physically present during that session get written in. Anything that was lost or stolen is gone from the system after that. It cannot start the car. On this generation of Impreza, completing that process takes the right diagnostic equipment and access to the security system. We handle that on site in Bridle Path or anywhere else in Simi Valley.

Q: My 2004 Impreza uses a regular key in the ignition, so does my fob have any kind of backup blade in it?

No. The 2004 Impreza is not a push-button-start vehicle, so the setup is different from newer Subarus that do have a hidden blade inside the smart fob. On your car, you have a separate metal key that goes in the ignition and the door locks, and a standalone remote fob that handles the lock and unlock functions wirelessly. The fob itself is just a remote. There is no blade stored inside it.

Q: My 2004 Impreza fob range dropped way off. Is the fob dying or is something else going on?

Usually it is the battery. The CR2025 in these fobs is small and the range falloff can be dramatic before it reads as "dead" on a tester. Swap the battery first, always. If range does not come back, the next thing to check is whether the fob needs to be re-synced to the car. On this generation, the fob can lose its pairing, especially if the battery went fully dead or was left dead for a while.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2004 Impreza. Can I program it myself?

This generation of Impreza does have an owner-accessible re-sync procedure for fobs that were previously registered, but a brand-new unpaired fob is a different situation. A fob that has never been registered to your specific car needs to go through a programming step that writes it into the vehicle. Whether that can be done with an ignition sequence or requires a tool depends on the exact procedure and condition of the car.

2004 Subaru Impreza Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Bridle Path, the call came in mid-morning. Guy had both keys, said one fob stopped working and the other was getting weak. He wanted a spare made while I was there because he had never gotten around to it and kept meaning to.

That part I hear constantly. People buy a used Impreza with one fob, think they will deal with it later, and later becomes two years.

I pulled up to his place and he handed me the two original fobs. The dead one just needed a fresh CR2025 and a re-sync. Range came back immediately. The weaker one got a new battery too and tightened up. Then we did the spare, cut the blade to match his locks and got the remote registered.

The testing is the part people do not expect. I walked the lot pressing buttons, checked range at a real distance, ran the lock and unlock cycle multiple times, and did it again from around the corner of the house. He asked why I kept going. I told him I want to hand you something I have already broken before you can.

He had called the Simi Valley dealer earlier that week. They told him to come in, leave the car, and they would call him. He saved a good chunk by the time we were done, and he did not give up his car for a day.

Subaru Impreza Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2004 Impreza?▼

Call a mobile locksmith who actually works on this generation of Subaru before you call the dealer. On a 2004 Impreza, all-keys-lost means the immobilizer needs to be reset and new keys need to be registered on site. Dealers will quote you for the job plus a tow if the car is not driveable, and some will add fees you did not see coming.
