Got a call from a guy over in the Oak Park area of Simi Valley. His 2004 Impreza had been running on one key for who knows how long, and the NHVWB1U711 remote finally gave out. Buttons mushy, range down to about three feet, CR2025 completely flat.
He had been locking and unlocking at the door every time. Said it felt like going backwards.
I showed up, popped the old fob open on the hood. The battery contacts had some corrosion, and the board (the small PCB marked FCC ID NHVWB1U711 on the back) had a film of pocket grime across the button pads. Cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2025, and reassembled. That remote woke right back up.
Then I cut him a second key blade from the door lock decode so he'd finally have a spare. On the 2004 Impreza without the immobilizer chip, the blade is a straight mechanical cut, SUB82 profile. No programming needed for the ignition side.
For the remote pairing, I walked him through the OEM self-program sequence: key on, key off, open and close the driver door once, cycle the key on and off ten times within fifteen seconds, door open and close again, then press any button on the fob. Lock cylinders all cycled, confirming acceptance.
The part he didn't expect was the testing. I walked thirty feet down his driveway and hit every button. Lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. Then again from forty feet. Three clean cycles.
He thought he needed a whole new setup. Turned out to be a battery, a cleaning, and a spare blade, done at his curb for a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
