1996 Subaru Impreza
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a mechanical key and what does that mean for my 1996 Impreza?

A mechanical key is exactly what it sounds like: a metal key cut to match your locks. That's it. No remote, no buttons, no battery. Your 1996 Impreza uses one. You turn it in the ignition to start and in the door lock to get in. Replacement is a cutting job, not a programming job. Getting a spare made is also simpler than on newer vehicles.

Q: I'm having trouble getting my Impreza to start. Could it be the key?

On a 1996 Impreza with a mechanical key, a no-start that's traced to the key is almost always about the cut. If the key turns but the ignition doesn't catch, the cuts may be worn enough that the tumblers aren't aligning properly. Try the door lock with the same key. If it also feels stiff or inconsistent, the blade is likely the issue. A key that was copied from another copy is a common culprit on older vehicles.

Q: Can I get a spare key made for my 1996 Impreza without going to a dealer?

Yes, and it's one of the easier spare-key jobs out there. Because the key is purely mechanical, you don't need a dealer, a diagnostic tool, or any pairing procedure. A mobile locksmith can cut a spare on site from your existing key or from the key code. I do these in the field all the time, including out near Hollywood Beach. The dealer is not the only option here, and honestly not a necessary one for a vehicle like this.

Q: My 1996 Impreza key broke off inside the ignition. What now?

Broken key extraction on these older ignition cylinders is a standard locksmith job. The cylinder design on mid-90s Subarus is accessible, and with the right extraction tools the broken piece usually comes out without pulling the whole cylinder. Once it's out, I cut a new key to match and you're back on the road. Don't try to pull it with pliers or push it further in with a spare. That makes the extraction harder and can damage the tumblers.

1996 Subaru Impreza Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy out at Hollywood Beach in Oxnard flagged me down after I wrapped another call nearby. He had a 1996 Impreza and a key that was giving him grief.

Not dead, not snapped, just inconsistent. Sometimes it turned clean, sometimes it stuck and he had to wiggle it before the ignition would catch. He figured it was the ignition cylinder getting old, which is fair thinking on a car this age.

I pulled out my decode tools and read the cuts on what he had. The key wasn't worn in a way that told a clean story. It looked like it had been copied at some point, probably more than once, and each generation of copy drifted a little further from the original spec. Classic generational copy problem. The cuts were shallow where they needed depth.

I cut him a fresh key directly to the correct specifications and had him test it in both the ignition and the door lock before I packed up. Smooth turn, no wiggling. He seemed almost suspicious it was that simple.

The cylinder was fine the whole time. It was just being asked to read a bad cut.

Subaru Impreza Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key shell is cracking and the blade is getting worn. What are my options?▼

On a 1996 Impreza, the key is a plain metal blade with no electronics inside, so there's nothing to transfer or reprogram. If the shell is just a grip sleeve or bow, that's a cosmetic fix. The more important thing is the blade itself. A worn blade is worth replacing rather than copying, because cutting a new key from a worn one just passes the wear forward.
