Got a call from a guy at the brake shop near Silverstrand Beach in Oxnard. He was already frustrated before I picked up. He'd called one of those cheap Google ad locksmiths for his 1999 Subaru Impreza, and the tech charged him a big number and left him with a key that started the car but a remote that did nothing. Here's the thing about a 99 Impreza. There is no transponder. The key is just a mechanical cut, Subaru NSN11 profile, and the remote keyless entry is a standalone unit running on a separate receiver module. The other locksmith apparently tried to "program" a transponder that doesn't exist in this car and then couldn't figure out why the remote wasn't pairing.
I showed up, paired his remote to the receiver using the manual door-lock learn procedure, and cut him a clean key from code. Took about twenty minutes. Both pieces working, remote locking from the parking lot, engine turning right over.
He just sat in the driver's seat clicking lock and unlock a few times like he was testing reality. Whole thing cost him a fraction of what the first guy charged for the botched job.
