1999 Subaru Impreza
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 1999 Subaru Impreza actually use?

It's a mechanical key. Metal, edge-cut, turns in the ignition and the door locks. There is no fob, no remote, no buttons. This generation of Impreza predates the transponder and remote systems that showed up on later models. Replacement is a cutting job, not a programming job. If someone is quoting you for chip programming or immobilizer work on this car, that's the wrong quote.

Q: I'm locked out of my 1999 Impreza and don't have a spare. What are my options?

A few paths. If you have any key, even a worn one that barely turns, bring it, because it gives us a starting point to cut an accurate copy. If you have zero keys, we can decode the lock cylinder directly at the car and cut a new key from that. No towing required, no dealer visit. I come to you, work off the lock, and you're back in and driving.

Q: Can I just get a copy made at a hardware store or a big-box kiosk?

Sometimes, but there's a catch. Hardware stores and kiosk machines work fine if your existing key is in good shape and they have the right blank in stock. The problem is that late-90s Subaru blanks aren't always sitting on the shelf at every location, and a worn key used as a template produces a worn copy. Get a copy made from a key that still has crisp cuts.

Q: My ignition is getting stiff and the key is hard to turn. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Could be both. On a car that's 25-plus years old, the ignition wafer tumblers wear down, and a key that's been copied a few generations over can accelerate that wear because each copy drifts slightly from the original profile. Try your key in the door lock. If the door is also stiff, the key is likely worn down. If the door is fine but the ignition fights you, the cylinder itself is probably the issue.

1999 Subaru Impreza Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was over near Lemonwood when the call came in. A guy at a shop off the main drag had snapped his only key off in the door lock. Not in the ignition, the door. He'd been having a rough day already and the broken key just capped it.

He told me another locksmith had quoted him a price that made no sense for a 1999 Impreza with a plain metal key. Something about chip programming and security resets. None of that applies to this car.

I pulled the broken key fragment out of the lock cylinder, decoded the cut right there, and had a working key made on site. No modules, no scan tool, no handshake with anything. Just a clean cut and a good blank.

He tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition, drove it forward and back in the lot. That was it. Done in about twenty minutes, for a fraction of what the other guy was asking.

Subaru Impreza Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key shell is cracking and the blade is getting loose. Can you do anything about that?▼

On a 1999 Impreza, the key is just a metal key, so there's no electronics to preserve inside a shell. If the blade itself is worn or damaged, the fix is a new key cut to your vehicle. We can decode the lock cylinder or use the existing key as a reference and cut a fresh one on site.
