2014 Subaru Impreza
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and how is it different from a regular key?

On your 2014 Impreza, the remote head key is a single unit where the key blade folds into the fob body. The fob side handles your remote lock and unlock functions and runs on a CR2032 battery. The blade side has a transponder chip embedded in it that communicates with the immobilizer every time you go to start the car. That's the part people miss.

Q: How does the dealer price compare to what you charge?

Way less. Dealers on these typically quote you the key cost, a programming fee, and sometimes a diagnostic charge on top. When you're all-keys-lost and they know it, the number gets higher. I've heard from Impreza owners who were looking at a significant bill before they even asked about a tow. Call for exact pricing. I don't post numbers here because it depends on your situation - one key versus all-keys-lost is a different job.

Q: My Impreza starts fine but the fob range has gotten really short. Is the key going bad?

Short range on the 2014 Impreza fob almost always points to the CR2032 before anything else. These batteries read as "good" on a standard tester right up until they don't have enough output for radio transmission. The transponder side draws almost nothing, so the car keeps starting while the remote range drops to a few feet. Swap the CR2032 first.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need someone to do it?

You'll need someone with the right equipment. The 2014 Impreza does have an onboard programming sequence, but it only works as an add-a-key when you already have a currently programmed working key to trigger the process. If you're adding a second key to a car that already has one functional key, that procedure can work.

2014 Subaru Impreza Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked in a gravel alley off Upper State Street, somewhere between the wine bars and the older duplexes up that way.

Third-shift schedule, just got home, reached for his key and realized the fob had been dead for a while - he'd been ignoring the sluggish range - and now the car wasn't recognizing it at all. He'd been using the blade to get in but the engine wouldn't turn over. He figured tow truck, dealer, wait three days, spend whatever they wanted to charge him.

I told him to stay put.

The alley was narrow and lit mostly by a porch light. I set up off the back bumper, connected to the OBD port, and ran the immobilizer registration for the 2014 Impreza. The remote head key - his original fob with the fold-out blade - came back online. Then I walked every button. Lock. Unlock. The other two. Each one confirmed before I called it done.

He asked me twice if it was actually finished. It was. Took under an hour, start to finish, in the alley, at midnight.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that included the tow. I told him what he already knew by that point: he didn't need any of that.

Subaru Impreza Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why is Subaru key replacement so expensive?▼

A few real reasons stack up. The remote head key on the 2014 Impreza isn't just a cut blade - it has a transponder chip that gets registered to the immobilizer, and the remote functions get written to the vehicle separately. The dealer runs this through their factory diagnostic software, and Subaru charges them a per-transaction fee for immobilizer access, which gets passed along to you.
