I got a call from a guy parked in the Poinsettia neighborhood in Ventura. He had snapped his key off in the ignition cylinder of his 2000 Subaru Impreza, flush at the face of the lock. The broken piece was in deep enough that he couldn't grip it, and he had already tried the tape trick, which made it worse.
I pulled up with the van and got the broken bit out with an extractor. Once it was free I could look at the cut and match it. I decoded the remaining fragment, cut a fresh key on site, and tested it in the ignition and both doors.
He mentioned he had called the dealer first. They told him they would need the car towed in, then they would need to look up whether they could even source a key blank for that year. He was looking at waiting, towing fees, and a bill that was a good chunk more than what he paid me.
I was done in about forty minutes, parked right on his street. He drove off on the same key I cut from the broken pieces of the old one.
