I was parked near the Samarkand neighborhood on a Tuesday afternoon when the call came in. Guy had snapped his key in the ignition of his 2011 Subaru Impreza. Not bent, not stuck. Snapped clean, with the tip of the blade sitting down in the cylinder.

He'd already called someone else. That locksmith told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out and replaced. New cylinder, rekeying, new key, the whole thing.

I pulled out my Lishi tool for that keyway and worked the broken fragment out without touching the wafer surfaces. No scratches, no damage, cylinder completely intact. Once the fragment was out, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly, got the exact cut depths, and cut a new blade right there on the car.

Then the second part: the chip in the new key blank needed to be registered to the car through the OBD port. That's the step a lot of people don't think about. A perfectly cut key with an unregistered chip will crank and crank and go nowhere. Programmed it on site, tested it in the ignition, tested it in both doors.

He drove away in about forty minutes. The other locksmith's plan would have meant leaving the car, sourcing a replacement cylinder, and spending a lot more time and money than any of that was worth. Destructive entry is a last resort. It wasn't close to being necessary here.
