I got a call from a guy parked near the Funk Zone on a Tuesday afternoon. He had driven down from the Santa Ynez Valley, grabbed lunch, and come back to a dash warning telling him his key wasn't being detected. The fob was sitting in his hand, battery was a year old by his best guess, and nothing was responding. He had already tried holding the fob up to the start button, which is the right instinct, and it cranked. So the car wasn't totally dead, but it was throwing a fit about something.
When I pulled up, I asked him to show me exactly what the fob looked like on the dash. The key-not-detected message was intermittent, which told me before I even opened anything that the fob antenna was reading the key but not consistently.
I popped the smart fob case and found a CR2032 with some surface oxidation on the positive face. Not dramatic, just enough to add resistance at the contact points. Cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh name-brand cell, and snapped the case back together properly instead of the half-snap it had been sitting in.
Then I walked everything: door handle touch unlock on both front handles, lock button, unlock, the full button set, and the start button with the fob inside the car and then just with the fob present. All of it came back clean.
He had been ready to call the dealer. They were going to have him tow it in, which is a whole production when you're parked a block from the wine bars on a weekday. He saved a good chunk and had his afternoon back.
The job took maybe twenty minutes. Most of that was the careful testing, not the fix itself.
