A kayaker near El Presidio State Historic Park in Santa Barbara lost his only key somewhere between the launch point and his car. Searched for half an hour, checked with everyone around, nothing. His 2013 Subaru Impreza was just sitting there and he had no way to open it.
He figured the next step was a tow truck and a week at the dealer. I told him I could be out that afternoon.
I started with my DAT17 Lishi tool. The 2013 Impreza runs a side-milled Subaru lock, and the Lishi picks and decodes each wafer position so I can cut an exact blade without needing the original key. Once I had the door open and the mechanical cut done, I connected through the OBD-II port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for the 4D62 immobilizer system. That clears any previous key registrations and writes the new transponder as primary.
His remote head key, CWTWB1U811 with the CR2032 battery, was cut, programmed, and tested right there in the lot. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, all four buttons. Then the real test: engine start. Fired right up.
He kept looking at the ignition like it might change its mind.
The whole thing, lock decode to engine running, took about 45 minutes. The dealer would have needed a tow first and days of waiting on top of a much bigger bill.
