Got a call from a guy up in the Riviera neighborhood in Santa Barbara. He had a 2008 Impreza 2.5i sitting in his steep driveway with zero keys. Bought it used a few months back with one key, and that one key just vanished somewhere between the house and the hiking trail he walks every morning.
He had already called the Subaru dealer. They told him tow it in, leave it, and wait a few days. The quote for an all-keys-lost transponder key on a third-gen Impreza made him start looking elsewhere.
I drove up to the Riviera, parked behind his car on that narrow hillside street, and got to work. The 2008 Impreza uses a Philips ID62 (T6) transponder chip with Subaru's immobilizer tied to the body-integrated ECU. For all-keys-lost on these, I pulled the IMMO data through OBD using my programmer, cleared out the old key registration, and wrote a fresh ID62 chip to the system. Cut the key to code by VIN, dropped the new transponder in, and turned the ignition.
Started right up. He just stood there looking at his driveway like the hard part was supposed to take longer.
Whole thing took about 30 minutes on site. No tow, no leaving the car somewhere for days, and a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
