I got a call from a guy out in Wood Ranch who said his 2002 Impreza fob had been acting flaky for weeks. Buttons working sometimes, not others. He figured it was the battery and swapped it himself, but nothing changed.
When I pulled up, he handed me the fob and I could feel it right away. The shell had a hairline crack running across the back, and one of the rubber button pads had shifted just enough to sit off-center. The CR2025 he put in was correct, fresh out of the pack, seated fine. But the pad on the lock button was no longer lining up with the contact underneath it. Half presses, no press, occasional press. That was the whole problem.
I transferred the internals into a new shell on the hood of my van, re-seated everything clean, and did a range test from the far end of his driveway. Lock, unlock, all four buttons, clean response at a real distance.
He mentioned he had already called the dealer in the area and was told they'd have to look at it first, then order parts. He was looking at multiple days without a working fob. We had it sorted in one visit.
That is the part of the job I like. Not every call is a full programming job. Sometimes it is just knowing where to look.
