I got a call from a guy over on the Eastside, parked near one of the scenic pullouts close to the hills. Road trip, long drive in, and he'd managed to snap his key in the ignition.
Clean break, both halves of the blade in there. Another locksmith had already come out and told him the cylinder needed to be drilled and replaced. He was looking at a big bill and a cylinder that would never be the same.
I brought my extraction tools and worked the broken fragment out without touching the wafer surfaces. No scoring, no damage. Once the fragment was clear, I decoded the lock directly, reading each wafer position to get the exact cut depths. From that decode I cut a new key blade on site.
Then the programming. The 2018 Impreza smart key system requires a diagnostic tool to register a new fob to the vehicle. I ran the registration sequence, watched it through the telematics prompt that trips people up, and let it complete. Tested every button, confirmed the vehicle started, walked the door handles.
He asked me what the other locksmith would have done to the ignition cylinder. I showed him the extracted fragment. The cylinder was untouched. Looked factory. He just shook his head.
