It was almost 10:30 at night when I got the call. A guy working the night janitor shift at a laundromat on the Eastside had lost his only key to his 2009 Impreza. Not misplaced. Gone. He was standing next to a car he could not get into, and his first instinct was to call a tow truck because he did not know locksmiths made keys on site.

He was panicking a little. No registration in hand, no idea what a VIN was, no spare key anywhere. I told him to stay put and walk me through it on the phone before he did anything else.

I asked him to look through the windshield at the lower left corner of the glass on the driver's side. He found the VIN in about thirty seconds. Then I asked if he had an insurance app on his phone. He did, and his registration was in there. That was everything I needed.

By the time I pulled into that lot I already had the right blank prepped. The 2009 Impreza takes a specific key blade and a transponder chip that has to be matched to the vehicle. I cut the key to his VIN, programmed the transponder, and tested it in the ignition. Engine started on the first turn. He stood there for a second like he was waiting for it to stall.

It did not stall.

He drove home that night. The dealer was closed, would have required a tow in the morning, and would have charged him a lot more than he paid me. The VIN, his ID, and knowing where the car was: that is the whole checklist. Everything else I bring with me.
