2009 Subaru Impreza Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call at 10:30 on a weeknight from a guy in the Funk Zone in Santa Barbara. Night janitor, just finished a shift, came out to a laundromat parking lot and his only Impreza key was gone. He was already looking up tow trucks when he found my number.
He didn't have his registration on him. Didn't know what a VIN was. I walked him through it on the phone. Told him to look through the windshield, bottom left of the glass on the driver's side. He read me the 17 characters. I also had him check his insurance app, and his registration was right there.
With the VIN I already knew the key type: 4D62 transponder, NSN19 blade profile, no remote integrated. I prepped the blank before I even left.
Under the parking lot lights I cut the key on my mobile unit and used my VVDI Key Tool to generate the 4D62 chip value and write it to a fresh transponder. Plugged into the OBD port, registered it to his immobilizer module, tested the start. Whole thing maybe 25 minutes on site.
He got quiet for a second when the engine turned over. Then he just said "man, I thought I was sleeping in this car tonight."
He drove home. A dealer would have needed a tow plus a next-day appointment, and the bill would have been a lot heavier. The VIN is the single most useful piece of information you can give me when you call.
