A guy near Rancho Tapo Community Park in Simi Valley flagged me down about his 2001 Impreza. He wanted a spare key and a working remote because his original NHVWB1U711 fob had a cracked case and one dead button. He had already called the dealer and got the runaround. They told him the part was discontinued, suggested he try eBay, and quoted him a wait time he didn't want to think about.
He asked me straight up whether an aftermarket remote would be "as good as dealer." Fair question.
I showed him the replacement fob side by side with his original. Same four-button layout, same DAT17 side-milled blade profile, same 88036-XA010 circuit board footprint. The button feel was identical. The only difference was no Subaru logo stamped on the back.
Cut the key on the van, matched it to his door and ignition. Then I programmed the remote using the OBD-based procedure through the Body Integrated Unit, which on the second-gen Impreza (GG chassis, 2000 to 2007) handles all remote registration. Cycled all four buttons at every door, the trunk, and the panic. Everything answered.
He stood there clicking the lock button a few extra times like he was making sure it was real. Then he just pocketed it and said "that's it?"
