KESSY stands for Keyless Entry, Start, and Security System. It is Volkswagen's branded name for its passive proximity entry and push-button start system, used across Jetta, Tiguan, Atlas, Passat, and Golf models from around 2009 onward and standard on MQB platform vehicles from 2015. The fob communicates with antennas around the door handles and within the cabin to detect your presence without any button press, allowing hands-free unlocking and push-button starting. Programming a replacement KESSY key requires OBD-II access and a PIN from the immobilizer module. There is no owner self-programming method on any KESSY-equipped VW.

This warning on KESSY-equipped VWs almost always means the fob battery is running low, below the 3.0 to 3.06 volt threshold the KESSY system requires for reliable signal detection. Even a battery that tests as functional on a standard battery tester may be too weak for the more demanding KESSY proximity system. Replace the CR2032 battery as a first step. If both fobs show the same problem with fresh batteries, the vehicle-side antenna or KESSY module may be the issue. A stuck or dragging button on the fob can also burn out the fob's processor, which requires fob replacement rather than a battery swap.

On older Mk4 Golf and Jetta models from 1997 through roughly 2005, a limited owner programming sequence is possible for adding additional remote fobs using an ignition-on procedure, a held lock button, and specific cycling steps that can register up to four fobs. This only handles the remote entry functions and does not address transponder chip programming, which is still required for the car to start. On any VW with KESSY push-button start, or any all-keys-lost situation regardless of model year, professional OBD-II tools are required. MQB platform VWs from 2015 onward have no owner self-programming capability whatsoever.

Older pre-2015 VWs also have a documented immobilizer vulnerability where the HITAG2 transponder crypto can be cracked with about 30 minutes of offline computation after brief physical access, though this requires multiple steps beyond a simple relay attack. VW moved to stronger AES-128 encryption starting around 2015, and the ID.4 and ID.Buzz from 2021 onward use ultra-wideband distance verification that makes relay attacks significantly harder. For pre-2021 models, Faraday pouch storage overnight is the most effective countermeasure.

Yes, in most cases. VW flip key fobs on Golf, Jetta, GTI, and related platforms have a replaceable outer shell that you can swap without affecting the transponder programming. The electronic board and chip remain in the new housing. After a shell replacement, the fob should work normally. If the board or buttons were damaged along with the shell, a full fob replacement and programming session is needed.
