How Cabrio Key Systems Changed Over the Years
Early Mk4 Transponder Key
VW stepped into immobilizer territory here with the Immobilizer II system and an ID48 transponder chip embedded in the key blade. Your key looks like a standard VW key, four buttons on the fob, and it uses either an NBG730956 or M36HU01WT FCC ID. The transponder talks to your car's immobilizer every time you turn the ignition, so a plain metal copy from the hardware store will never start the engine.
Remote Head Key Arrives
VW combined the remote and the key into one unit for these years, giving you a remote head key with the same ID48 chip and Immobilizer II security. The FCC ID shifted to NBG730956T or M3GHU01WT, and the fob now runs on a CR2032 battery. Four buttons handle lock, unlock, trunk, and panic, all built into the key you turn in the ignition.
Final Year, Same Platform
The 2002 is the last Cabrio, and it carries the same remote head key with an ID48 chip and Immobilizer II. FCC ID is NBG730956T, battery is CR2032, four buttons. Nothing changed mechanically from the 2000 and 2001, but it is worth confirming your VIN with us because some replacement fobs were sold without the transponder chip, which means they will lock and unlock your doors but never start the engine.
Which Key Does Your Cabrio Use?
A standard VW key with an ID48 transponder chip inside. The chip communicates with your Immobilizer II system every time you start the car.
The remote and key are one piece. Lock, unlock, trunk, and panic buttons built into the head of the key, with the same ID48 chip for starting.
Same remote head key as the 2000 and 2001. Make sure any replacement includes the ID48 transponder chip, or it will only work as a door key.
How Much Does a Cabrio Key Cost?
Price includes key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing; lockout service runs $95 to $125.

Common Cabrio Key Problems
FCC ID Mismatch
Wrong FCC ID on a replacement fob is the number one reason DIY programming fails. Your Cabrio needs NBG730956, M36HU01WT, NBG730956T, or M3GHU01WT depending on the year. We verify by opening the original before ordering anything.
No Factory Alarm Module
Press the fob during programming and nothing happens, no horn beep. Aftermarket fob programming only works if your Cabrio has the factory alarm module, the small white box behind the headlight switch. Removed, the procedure fails. We verify in two minutes.
Missing Transponder Chip
People assume the new key is defective when the engine cranks a second and dies. Usually the replacement has no immobilizer chip. Aftermarket keys like HLO1J0959753F are door-only. They unlock the Cabrio, Immobilizer II kills the engine. We confirm ID48 first.
Single Key Programming Limitation
First question when a Camarillo or Simi Valley caller cannot program a fob: how many working keys? VW's two-key remote programming requires two working keys. With only one, the on-board procedure will not start. We bring tools to add a second key first.
Can You Program a Cabrio Key Yourself?
You can program the remote buttons yourself if you have two working keys and the factory alarm module. The procedure uses one key in the ignition and one in the door cylinder. But the transponder chip still needs professional programming with a diagnostic tool, so the remote is only half the job.
The remote portion may work with the two-key door method if your factory alarm system is intact. But the Immobilizer II transponder programming requires a professional diagnostic tool like VAG-COM or VCDS. Without that, your engine will not start.
Same situation as the 2000 and 2001. Remote buttons can potentially be synced with the two-key method, but the ID48 transponder chip needs professional immobilizer programming. No shortcut around that.

The 1998 to 2002 VW Cabrio shares its Mk4 Golf platform and key system, which means key fobs can sometimes cross-program between the Cabrio, Jetta, and Golf of the same era. VW basically built a convertible out of a Golf and gave it a different name. Platform sharing at its finest.
