Got the call around 11pm from a guy at the taco stand lot near Rose Shopping Center in Oxnard. He'd just closed up his bar shift and his 2000 Cabrio wouldn't start. Cranked fine but the engine wouldn't catch. The little immobilizer warning light on the cluster was blinking steady, which told me over the phone exactly what was going on before I even left the house.
He'd been dealing with a weak battery for weeks. Kept meaning to replace it. What finally happened is the voltage dipped low enough that the Immo3 module in the instrument cluster lost its handshake with the ID48 transponder in his flip key. The car saw the key as a stranger.
I got out there, hooked up to the OBD port, and pulled the 7-digit SKC (secret key code) from the cluster's HC908 processor. Once I had that, I re-adapted his existing key back into the immobilizer memory. Whole thing took maybe 25 minutes. His remote flip key worked again, engine fired right up, immobilizer light went solid then off like it should.
I told him the real fix was a new car battery before this happened again on a darker night. He nodded like he already knew.
The dealer was closed, a tow would have parked his Cabrio somewhere overnight with still no working key, and he had an opening shift in eight hours. He drove home instead.
