1998 Volkswagen Cabrio Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was out in Bridle Path one afternoon for a job on a 1998 VW Cabrio. The owner had one key left and the remote had been flaky for months. She'd been ignoring it, starting the car just fine but manually locking the doors every time she walked away because the lock button had gotten unreliable. She finally called when the blade started sticking in the ignition.
She met me in the driveway. The car was sitting there, burgundy, original condition, clearly cared for. She handed me the key and said, "Just don't tell me I need to go to a dealer."
I looked the fob over first. The housing had a small crack near the hinge, which on these units is a common spot for flex stress over decades of flipping the blade open and closed. Inside, the contact points were oxidized. I cleaned them, tested the remote range, and it picked up immediately. But the blade issue was real. It was worn enough that it was binding slightly, so I cut her a fresh blade to match her lock and door cylinder, tested it in the ignition, tested it in both door locks, and confirmed the remote functions were working across a reasonable range.
Then I started the car and let it idle for a minute. She stood next to me watching.
She had called a dealer earlier that week. They told her to come in, leave the car, and wait for a parts order. She said the whole thing felt like a bigger deal than it needed to be. When I handed the key back after maybe 30 minutes in her own driveway, she just said, "That was it."
I packed up. She locked the car three times in a row just to confirm the remote was working. Habit.
