About Pontiac Keys

Pontiac stopped making cars in 2010, but the Grand Prix, Grand Am, G6, Firebird, and G8 are still on the road all over Southern California. We know GM's VATS, Passlock, and PK3 systems and carry the blanks and programming tools to service every generation.
Pontiac Keys Still Cut and Programmed On Site, No Dealer Required

Because Pontiac was discontinued in 2010, most dealers will not touch these vehicles or will charge a premium just to look at them. Every Pontiac on the road today runs one of three GM security platforms depending on the year it was built. Pre-1996 models use standard mechanical keys with no chip. From the mid-1990s through the early 2000s, Pontiac used VATS resistor keys and early PK2 transponder chips.

Modern Pontiac Key Programming
The 2002 through 2007 generation moved to PK3 and PK3 Plus encrypted transponders, which require a PIN read from the BCM to program. The final 2008 to 2010 models, including the G8 and later Solstice trims, added proximity fobs and push-to-start on select trims. We carry blanks and programmed fobs for the full range, pull PINs on site via OBD, and handle all-keys-lost situations without needing a GM dealer or a tow. If you drive a Pontiac, we are one of the few mobile services that can still help you the same day.
What Makes Pontiac Keys Different

Pontiac vehicles present a challenge that most locksmiths skip entirely: they are old enough to have multiple generations of GM security systems, the brand no longer exists, and the dealer network has largely moved on. What this means practically is that a 2003 Grand Am, a 2007 Grand Prix, and a 2009 G8 can all sit in the same parking lot and require three completely different programming approaches.

Three Cars, Three Different Jobs
The Grand Am uses PK3 with an on-board add-key procedure that requires a working key to execute. The Grand Prix uses PK3 Plus and needs a PIN pulled from the BCM via OBD before any new key can be programmed. The G8 uses PK3 Plus with an optional proximity system and requires a four-digit security PIN read directly from the BCM using diagnostic software. Then there is the Vibe, which shares its platform with the Toyota Matrix and uses Toyota's own transponder architecture entirely, meaning GM tooling does not apply.

The Toyota Platform Exception
Getting any of these wrong means a car that cranks and will not start, and diagnosing why requires knowing the platform before touching anything. We know the difference across every Pontiac generation on the road.
GM Dealer vs. EZ Car Keyz

GM dealers that still service Pontiac vehicles charge $230 to $550 for a transponder key replacement plus a diagnostic fee, and many will tell you they cannot help at all on a discontinued model. We handle every Pontiac generation on site at your location for significantly less, with the correct blanks in stock and no runaround about parts availability.

Pro Tip

If your Pontiac security light is on and the car will not start, do not immediately assume you need a new key or a locksmith. The most likely cause on any 1998 through 2006 Grand Am, Grand Prix, or Bonneville is a Passlock sensor issue, not a key problem at all. The Passlock relearn procedure takes about 30 minutes and you can do it yourself: turn the ignition to the On position without cranking, wait for the security light to go out, then turn the key off and wait 10 seconds. Repeat this cycle three times. On the fourth attempt the car should start. If it does not, or if the problem keeps coming back, the wiring inside the steering column or the ignition cylinder sensor has likely failed and needs a proper repair rather than a workaround.

Spare Key Advice for Buyers
Also worth knowing: if you are buying a used Pontiac, make a copy of the key before anything else happens to it. Replacement blanks are available but PK3 Plus programming requires the original key or a PIN pulled from the BCM, and the older the vehicle gets the harder it is to find a service that will tackle it correctly.
Pontiac Owners on Our Service
"Called on New Year's Day at 5 PM. Key worked on ignition and passenger door but not the driver door. He looked at the key more closely and said it could be a worn out key versus a door cylinder. Got the spare key and it worked. Saved me more than $100 compared to changing the door cylinder. Prompt, professional and fair pricing."
Gordon Harada"EZ Car Keys is by far the best locksmith I've ever used. Marco is prompt, prices are reasonable, and he has the experience that leaves you comfortable. We've used him twice and will never use anyone else!"
Traci Thomas"Simply amazing. They honored their phone quote even though the job took much longer due to problems with my ignition cylinder. They disassembled, repaired, made two new keys and programmed key fobs - all for the original quote."
