How the G5 Key System Evolved
1st Generation (Delta Platform)
On-board programming makes this one straightforward. Your G5 uses a Texas 4D (ID45) transponder chip inside a standard blade key with three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk. We plug into your OBD-II port, pull the PIN from the BCM, and program the chip to your PASS-Key III+ immobilizer right in your driveway.
1st Generation Facelift
OBD-II programming keeps things simple here too. GM gave the G5 minor styling updates for 2009, but the key system is identical: Texas 4D (ID45) chip, standard blade, three-button remote, PASS-Key III+ immobilizer. Same tools, same process, same result as the earlier years.
1st Generation Final Year
On-board programming wraps up the G5's run. The 2010 is the last Pontiac G5 ever made, and it carries the same Texas 4D (ID45) transponder chip and PASS-Key III+ system as every G5 before it. The only difference is that DIY relearn procedures are not confirmed for this year, so professional OBD-II programming is the way to go.
Which Key Does Your G5 Use?
A standard metal key with a chunky head that holds both the transponder chip and a three-button remote. The chip talks to your car's immobilizer every time you turn the ignition.
Same key as the earlier G5 models. Three buttons for lock, unlock, and trunk, with a Texas 4D chip inside the key head that your car checks before it lets you start.
Identical key to every other G5 year. Standard blade, three-button remote, CR2032 battery for the remote functions, and a transponder chip that requires professional programming for this final model year.
What to Expect Price-Wise
Price includes key blank, cutting, transponder programming, and testing; lockout service runs $95-$125 if you are locked out.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
Over 1,000 five-star reviews say it better than we can. Here is how the numbers break down.
Common Pontiac G5 Key Problems
Transponder Synchronization Failure
G5 owners think their new key is defective when it will not start. The real problem is the transponder chip was never programmed to the immobilizer. The Texas 4D chip needs to be registered with your BCM through OBD-II, or PASS-Key III+ blocks the ignition.
Remote Fob Battery Drain
First check on a G5 with a dead remote is the CR2032, but replacing every few weeks is not normal. The 2007-2009 fobs are known for constant signal polling that drains batteries fast, on GT trims with heated mirrors. We test fob current draw on-site to confirm battery vs board.
Door Cylinder Actuator Wear
The actuator motor inside the door is wearing out. common power-lock failure on high-mile 2008-2010 G5 coupes. Remote works for one door but not the other. Mechanical issue, not a key or fob problem, so we will let you know upfront if you need a mechanic instead.
Can You Program a G5 Key Yourself?
Yes, the 2007-2009 G5 supports GM's on-board relearn procedure. You need a properly cut transponder key, then run three 10-minute-30-second ignition cycles watching the security light. Timing is critical, and this erases all previously programmed keys. If you already have one working key, there is a shorter add-key procedure too. If the timing goes wrong, wait at least an hour before retrying to avoid a BCM lockout.
No confirmed DIY procedure exists for the 2010 G5. This final model year requires a professional scan tool for transponder programming. Call us at (805) 790-8162 and we will handle it on-site.

Did You Know?
The Pontiac G5 shared its Delta platform and PASS-Key III+ immobilizer with the Chevrolet Cobalt. The two cars were so mechanically similar that locksmiths can cross-use key blanks like the Ilco 704-P between them. Pontiac basically took the Cobalt, gave it a new grille and some different trim, and sold it under the G5 name from 2007 until Pontiac shut down in 2010.
