Got a call from a guy near the Del Sol shopping area in Oxnard. His 2008 G5 cranked all day long but wouldn't start. He'd already tried jumping it, swapping the starter relay, and Googling everything under the sun. The SECURITY light on the instrument cluster was staring right at him the whole time.
I pulled up and could hear it immediately. Strong crank, zero fire. Classic Passlock behavior. The Body Control Module, part number 25839938 on these, wasn't seeing the correct resistance signal from the lock cylinder sensor, so it killed the fuel injectors.
Opened up the lower column cover right there in the parking lot. The Passlock sensor connector had some corrosion on the pins, which shifts the resistance value just enough to make the BCM think somebody is forcing the lock. Cleaned the connector, verified the resistance was back in the correct range, ran the relearn procedure through the OBD port to re-sync the BCM.
He sat in the driver seat while I worked and kept turning the key out of habit every few minutes, even while I had the column apart. Just instinct.
Once the relearn completed, the SECURITY light cycled off and the engine caught on the first turn. Tested it cold-start three more times to be sure. The whole visit ran maybe 40 minutes. The dealer would have wanted the car towed in and probably quoted a lock cylinder replacement. He drove home instead.
