Sunfire Key Systems by Generation
J-Body Mechanical Key
GM kept things simple here. Your Sunfire uses a standard mechanical key with no transponder chip and no electronic immobilizer built into the key itself. That means no programming is needed; we cut the key to match your locks and you are good to go. Some models do have a Passlock sensor in the ignition cylinder, but that reads the lock itself, not the key.
Which Key Does Your Sunfire Use?
A straightforward metal key with no chip inside. No battery, no buttons, no electronics. We cut it to match your ignition and door cylinders.
What to Expect Price-Wise
Pricing includes mobile service, key cutting, and verification that the key works in your ignition, doors, and trunk.
Us vs. the Dealer
Our work carries a warranty, and you never have to leave your driveway to use it.
Common Sunfire Key Problems
Worn Ignition Cylinder
Twenty-plus years of daily use wears down the internal wafers in yourignition cylinder. That is the root cause when key sticks, turns hard, or refuses to come back out. We replace the cylinder on-site and cut a fresh key to match, usually in an hour in Simi Valley.
Lost or Broken Mechanical Keys
Your key snapped in half, or it just disappeared. Either way, you are stuck. Since the Sunfire uses a purely mechanical key with no chip, we decode your existing locks and cut a new key on the spot. No programming, no dealer visit, no tow truck.
Door Cylinder Failure
People think the key is the problem when the door will not unlock. Real culprit is a worn or seized door cylinder. The internal springs and tumblers corrode, on cars parked outdoors in Oxnard or near the coast. We replace the cylinder and match it to your existing key.
Can You Program a Sunfire Key Yourself?
Your Sunfire uses a mechanical key with no transponder chip. There is nothing to program. You just need the key cut correctly to match your locks, which is what we do on-site.
If your Sunfire has an aftermarket or optional keyless entry remote, you can program it yourself using the trunk jumper wire method. This only programs the remote buttons; the ignition key itself needs no programming.
Later Sunfires with keyless entry remotes can also be self-programmed using GM's standard relearn procedure. Again, this is remote buttons only. The physical key is purely mechanical and just needs to be cut.

Did You Know?
Back in 1995, when GM launched the Pontiac Sunfire to replace the Sunbird, most automakers were already moving toward electronic transponder keys and immobilizer systems. The Sunfire bucked that trend entirely. It remained one of the last mainstream American compact cars to use a purely mechanical key system with no electronic security features through its entire production run, all the way until GM discontinued it in 2005.
