1998 Pontiac Sunfire
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a mechanical key and what does the replacement process look like?

A mechanical key is a metal blade cut to a specific pattern that matches your ignition cylinder and door locks. There are no electronics inside it. The replacement process comes down to two things: getting the correct blank for your vehicle and cutting it to the right profile. That cut either comes from a key code on file for your VIN, or by decoding one of your existing locks directly. I do both on site.

Q: Do I need to be there the whole time while you make the key?

You need to be there at the start so I can check your ID and registration against the vehicle - that step does not get skipped. After that, most people go back inside or sit in the shade while I work. The whole job on a mechanical key is quick, so you will not be waiting long. I come find you when it is ready and we test it together before I leave.

Q: I lost my only key. Can you still make one without a spare?

Yes, all-keys-lost on a 1998 Sunfire is a regular job. Since this is a mechanical key, I do not need a working key to start from. I can pull the key code through your VIN, or if that is not available I can decode the lock cylinder directly to get the correct cut. Either way, a new key gets made on site. No towing to a dealer, no ordering parts ahead of time.

Q: My key turns hard in the ignition and is starting to feel like it might stick. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

On a car this age, it is often both working against each other at the same time. A key that has been copied a few generations down the line can be off just enough to put extra wear on the ignition wafers, and worn wafers start binding even a correctly cut key. First thing to check is whether a known-good original key turns smoothly. If it does, the copy is the problem.

1998 Pontiac Sunfire Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked on Telephone Road heading toward Pacific View when the call came in. Guy had snapped his only key off in the ignition of his 1998 Sunfire. Not bent, not stuck - snapped clean, with the tip still sitting inside the cylinder.

He had already called two places. One told him they needed a day's notice and the other gave him a number that made him pause before he even finished saying it out loud.

I got there with my extractor set and the right blank for that year. Got the broken tip out without pulling the cylinder, which saved us both a lot of time. Decoded the cut from the lock, ran the blade, and handed him a working key inside about twenty minutes.

He asked me twice if there was anything else I needed to do to it. Programming, computer stuff, anything. I told him that was it. The key runs the lock and the ignition, and we already confirmed both. He looked at it like he expected it to do something more complicated.

Sometimes the job is just a clean cut and a steady hand. That is enough.

Pontiac Sunfire Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 1998 Pontiac Sunfire key have any buttons or a remote?▼

No. The 1998 Sunfire uses a plain metal key with no remote, no fob, and no buttons. Lock and unlock the doors the old-fashioned way - key in the door lock. What you are getting is a replacement key blade cut to your vehicle, and that is the whole job.
