1999 Pontiac Sunfire
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is there an FCC ID or part number I need to find before getting a replacement key?

No FCC ID, no fob part number, none of that applies here. The 1999 Sunfire uses a mechanical key with no remote component. What I actually need is your VIN, which lets me pull the key code and cut a blade that matches your locks and ignition. If for any reason the code lookup comes back incomplete, I can decode the cut directly from your door lock cylinder.

Q: Do I need to bring my 1999 Pontiac Sunfire to a shop to get a replacement key made?

No. I come to you. The car can be sitting in your driveway in Pierpont, in a parking lot, wherever it ended up. All I need is access to the vehicle and the VIN. I cut the key on site with my mobile unit. No tow, no appointment at a dealer, no waiting around for parts to be ordered. For a mechanical key like this one, the whole job is fast.

Q: I only have one key for my 1999 Sunfire and I am worried about losing it. Can I get a spare made before that happens?

Yes, and honestly this is the smarter call compared to waiting until you are locked out. Getting a spare cut while you still have a working key means I can use the original to verify the cut is right before I leave. If you wait until the key is lost or broken, the process still works but takes a little longer since I am working from the lock or the VIN code rather than an existing key to cross-check against.

Q: My 1999 Sunfire key turns hard or feels sticky in the ignition. Is that a key problem or something else?

Could be either. A worn key blade that has rounded edges from years of use will sometimes drag in the cylinder. It can also be the cylinder itself getting stiff, which is common on vehicles this age. Try your door lock with the same key. If it turns fine there but fights you in the ignition, the cylinder is likely the issue, not the key blank. If a freshly cut key still turns hard, the ignition cylinder may need service.

1999 Pontiac Sunfire Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in Pierpont on a Tuesday afternoon for a guy who had snapped his only key off in the ignition of his 1999 Sunfire. Half in, half out. The car was in his driveway off Surfside Drive, and he had already tried the tape-and-tweezers method before he called me. Didn't work. It rarely does.

I extracted the broken portion first, which takes patience more than anything else. Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded the key from the lock, cut a fresh blade to match, and tested it in the ignition and the door. Clean turn both ways.

He asked me how much the dealer would have charged. I told him the dealer likely would have wanted the car towed to them, then scheduled him for a later date. He just nodded like that tracked perfectly with his expectations.

No tow. No wait. Done in the driveway.

Does the 1999 Pontiac Sunfire key fob use a battery I need to replace?▼

There is no fob and no battery on this one. The 1999 Sunfire uses a plain metal key. You turn it in the ignition and in the door lock, and that is the whole system. No remote, no coin cell, nothing to swap out.
