Got a call from a guy near the Oxnard Performing Arts Center. His 2002 Sunfire wouldn't start, and he was convinced the key fob was the problem because it had just died the week before. He'd already bought a replacement KOBUT1BT online, but the car still cranked and refused to fire.
I pulled up, and the SECURITY light on the dash was doing the solid-on thing. Classic Passlock II. The resistor reading inside the lock cylinder was drifting, and the BCM was rejecting the start signal. Nothing to do with the remote at all.
Handled the Passlock relearn right there in the parking lot. Ten-minute wait cycle, key to ON, wait for the SECURITY light to go off, cycle it back. Three rounds of that. Not glamorous work. He sat on a bench nearby scrolling his phone while I babysat ignition cycles.
Once the BCM accepted the relearn, it fired right up. Then I paired his new KOBUT1BT since he had it sitting in the package anyway. Standard door-lock-button sequence on these, held lock and unlock together, got the chime, programmed both his old and new remotes so he had a spare.
He thought the dealer was his only option. They'd quoted him a tow-in, a diagnostic fee, and three to five days without the car. He drove home twenty minutes after I showed up, both remotes working, for a fraction of what they wanted.
