How Pontiac G8 Keys Work
G8 Base (V6)
GM brought the Holden Commodore platform to the States and kept the PK3 (Pass-Key III+) immobilizer system intact. Your Base model uses a Philips ID46 transponder chip inside a 4 or 5-button flip key (FCC OUC6000083) with a laser-cut blade. We program it through the OBD-II port under the dash, which means no dealer appointment and no tow.
G8 GT (V8)
The GT stepped up to a 6.0L V8 but kept the exact same key system as the Base. Same Philips ID46 chip, same PK3+ immobilizer, same 4-5 button flip key (FCC OUC6000083) with a CR2032 battery. The only thing that changed was the engine; the security hardware stayed put. That makes our job straightforward whether you are in Oxnard or Simi Valley.
G8 GXP (6.2L V8)
Pontiac's final performance statement. The GXP got the 6.2L LS3 and a six-speed manual option, but the key and immobilizer are identical to the GT. Philips ID46 transponder, PK3+ system, OBD-II programming. The ECM calibration is different for the GXP, so we verify that before we start programming. Same visit, same result.
Which Key Does Your G8 Use?
A 4 or 5-button flip key (FCC OUC6000083) with a laser-cut blade that swings out from the fob body and a Philips ID46 transponder chip. The chip talks to your car's computer to let it start.
Same flip key as the Base with lock, unlock, trunk, remote start, and (on the 5-button) panic buttons. The Philips ID46 chip inside is what actually lets the engine start.
Identical flip key to the GT. Four or five buttons (lock, unlock, trunk, remote start, optional panic), laser-cut blade, CR2032 battery. The GXP's extra horsepower does not change the key hardware at all.
How Much Does a Pontiac G8 Key Cost?
Price includes key cutting, transponder programming, and testing; lockout service runs $95 to $125.
EZ Car Keyz vs. the Dealer
We carry the same GM-compatible programming tools the dealer uses. We just bring them to your driveway for about half the price.
Common Pontiac G8 Key Problems
Transponder Failure
The Philips ID46 chip inside your key can fail over time, especially on high-mileage G8s. Security light comes on and the engine cranks but refuses to start. We test the chip with our diagnostic tools and, if dead, cut and program a new key on the spot.
Remote Battery Drain
Remote keeps dying even with a fresh CR2032? If you use factory remote start frequently, the fob draws more power than normal and burns through batteries fast. Swap the battery first. If it keeps happening, the remote board may need reprogramming on-site in Camarillo.
Immobilizer Sync Loss
Owners assume a dead battery killed their key. It did not. The ECM lost sync with your transponder when the battery was disconnected or went flat. The key is fine; the computer forgot it. We reconnect the two with a scan tool relearn, back in business in 15 minutes.
Ignition Tumbler Wear
Before recommending a new key, we check the ignition cylinder. The V8 G8 models (GT and GXP) put more vibration through the steering column, wearing the tumbler faster than expected. If the key is hard to turn or sticks, the cylinder may need service. We diagnose on-site and tell you what is going on first.
Can You Program a G8 Key Yourself?
If you have lost every key, the G8 does support a 10-minute relearn procedure. You cycle the ignition to ON for exactly 10 minutes and 30 seconds, three times in a row, with tight timing between cycles. It works, but you need a pre-cut flip key with the correct Philips ID46 chip already in it. One timing mistake and you start over.
If you still have a working key, adding a spare is simpler. Insert your working key, turn to ON, remove it, then insert the new key within 10 seconds and turn to ON. The new key must already be cut to match and have the right transponder chip. If the timing window passes, you have to start over.

Did You Know?
Most people do not know this: the Pontiac G8 was actually a rebadged Holden Commodore, built in Australia. GM took an Australian rear-wheel-drive V8 sedan, slapped a Pontiac badge on it, and shipped it to the States with the PK3+ immobilizer and Philips ID46 transponder system carried over from the Holden. It was one of the last great rear-drive American sedans before Pontiac shut its doors in 2010.
